The Terps won by their largest margin of victory this season.
No. 6 Maryland women’s lacrosse entered Thursday night’s game against Oregon in desperate need of a win. The Terps were coming off an embarrassing 12-goal loss to No. 3 Northwestern — its largest margin of defeat in four seasons.
Luckily for Maryland, the Ducks posed little threat of an upset, as the Terps took a swift four-goal lead en route to a comfortable 16-4 win over Oregon in College Park — the same score the Wildcats beat them by last week.
Midfielder Kori Edmondson was the driving force behind Maryland’s prolific offensive day, tying a career high with four goals on six shots. She also posted a team-high five draw controls, a caused turnover and a ground ball.
As a team, Maryland finished with a 41% shooting percentage and won 16 of 21 draw controls.
JJ Suriano impressed in the cage, saving five of seven shots on target, while Oregon keeper Paige Crowther held her own against a whopping 33 shots on goal, totaling a career-high 17 saves.
Suriano and the other starters rested for much of the fourth quarter with the Terps already up 10 goals, allowing some bench players to see significant playing time. Of the bench players Emma Abbazia and Lauren LaPointe impressed the most, each recording a hat trick. LaPointe made all three of her shots and notched an assist.
Lexi Dupcak also took full advantage of her fourth quarter minutes, scoring her first career goal.
Before the game was out of reach and substitutes entered the game, the score was tied at zero through the first six minutes of the first quarter. Each goalie posted three saves over that span — two of Suriano’s were in free-position situations.
But then the Terps’ offense found a few openings and Suriano was not needed for the rest of the period, as they took a 4-0 lead into the second quarter.
Maryland scored three more consecutive goals in the second quarter before Oregon notched its first — Bri Carrasquillo’s 28th of the season. Maryland entered halftime with a comfortable seven-goal lead.
The third quarter featured some back-and-forth action, but the Ducks could not afford to trade goals already in a significant deficit, which worsened before the final period. Edmondson scored two consecutive goals in the quarter, while Devin Livingston and Jordyn Lipkin also got on the board.
With a double-digit goal lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Terps coasted to their largest margin of victory this season in their first-ever meeting with Oregon.
Three things to know
1. Shot differential. Maryland took 25 more shots than Oregon Thursday, its largest shot differential of the season.
2. Maryland played clean. The Terps committed just three turnovers, its lowest total of the season. They committed a season-high 21 against Northwestern.
3. Goodbye College Park. Thursday marked Maryland’s last game in College Park until April 13, playing its next four games away from home.
