NYC Mayor Adams aligns with Trump border czar to tackle repeat offenders

December 15, 2024 by The Baltimore Sun

Democratic New York Mayor Eric Adams appears eager to work with the incoming administration after meeting with President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming “border czar.”

Adams said he and Tom Homan’s conversation was focused on figuring out how to address those who repeatedly commit crimes in New York City.

Homan was tapped by Trump to oversee the southern and northern borders and be responsible for deportation efforts once Trump returns to the White House.

During the mayor’s news conference, he noted that he and Homan share the same goals, while he insisted that the city’s safety is his number one priority. Adams did not disclose additional details or future plans as his legal team looks into what could be done.

“His goal is the same goal I have. We cannot allow dangerous individuals to commit repeated violent acts of violence in our cities across America,” Adams said. “Safety means everything to me. 500,000 children. We don’t know where they are right now in this country.”

Adams made it clear that the Big Apple will not be a safe haven for individuals who commit violent crimes.

The meeting marked Adams’ step toward collaborating with the Trump administration. He has maintained that his positions have not changed and argues he is trying to protect New Yorkers.

During the news conference, the mayor was asked if New York City would remain a sanctuary city.

“New York remaining a sanctuary city is determined by the City Council,” Adams said. “I’m going to attempt to use my executive orders to go after dangerous people who are committing violent acts.”

New York offers social services like healthcare and emergency shelter to low-income residents. City and state grants also provide significant access to lawyers, which is not guaranteed in immigration court as they are in criminal court.

In other parts of the country, Republican governors and lawmakers have already rolled out proposals that could help Trump carry out his pledge to deport millions of people.
