The Orioles’ game against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday will begin in a rain delay, the club announced 45 minutes before the originally scheduled 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Baltimore didn’t immediately provide an expected start time for the contest.
Grounds crew members rolled out the tarp onto the field at Camden Yards about an hour and a half before the game was delayed. The Orioles opened the stadium gates at 5:30 p.m. and immediately posted a message on the scoreboard asking fans to “seek shelter in covered areas of the ballpark” because of the threat of lightning strikes in the area.
Rain then began to fall approximately 10 minutes later and continued through the Orioles’ announcement.
It marked the 11th time the Orioles (53-66) have gone into a rain delay this season. They entered Wednesday night with 10 hours’ worth of delays and six postponements.
Baltimore is hoping to even up the series with the red-hot Mariners, who took the opener, 1-0, on Tuesday night in a pitching duel between the Orioles’ Dean Kremer and Seattle’s George Kirby. Kremer was stuck with the tough-luck loss after pitching eight innings of one-run ball while Kirby finished with seven scoreless.
The Orioles have lost three games in a row and seven of their past 10 since holding a fire sale at the trade deadline.
