TORONTO — The Orioles swung a trade for right-hander Cody Poteet on Saturday, sending the Chicago Cubs cash considerations in a deal announced by both clubs. Baltimore optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk to give the team 39 players on its 40-man roster.
Poteet, 30, was already traded over the offseason as part of the New York Yankees’ deal for Cody Bellinger, a move that proved to be a true salary dump for Chicago. The Cubs designated him for assignment Thursday after Poteet allowed four runs in three appearances during spring training.
The 2015 fourth-round draft pick of the Miami Marlins has made 24 appearances (13 starts) in the majors with a 3.80 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 69 strikeouts to 35 walks in 83 innings for the Marlins and Yankees. Tommy John elbow surgery limited him to only one minor league appearance in 2023 and he spent most of last season at the Yankees’ Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with whom he posted a 3.92 ERA in 10 starts.
Though the Orioles do have Grayson Rodriguez (tricep) on the mend and Kyle Gibson building up his arm after signing with the team late in camp, their starting pitching depth in Triple-A Norfolk is thin to begin the season with Trevor Rogers (knee) and Chayce McDermott (lat) on the injured list.
