A partial building collapse prompted road closures and an evacuation in downtown Baltimore on Sunday, according to fire officials.
Fire crews responded to the 300 block of North Eutaw Street for the report of a building collapse, according to Baltimore City Fire Department Public Information Officer John Marsh. Upon arrival, crews identified a leaning building that Marsh said had partially collapsed.
An inspection of the building found the structure to be in “dangerous condition,” according to Marsh, with possible concerns that the building could further collapse. Fire officials were unable to confirm a cause for the partial collapse due to an ongoing investigation.
Marsh noted that one of the buildings neighboring the partially collapsed building were vacant, and another was occupied. He said the fire department evacuated the occupied building until further notice due to the partial collapse and looming safety concerns.
Marsh was unable to confirm Sunday afternoon what part of the building collapsed but said a structural engineer was requested to inspect the building and that Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. was also en route.
No injuries were reported, according to Marsh, and roads in the area have been shut down for an unknown length of time.
In June, numerous roadways were shutdown in the area of West Fayette Street and Park Avenue downtown after part of a vacant building’s roof collapsed onto the sidewalk and roadway.
