I am an ardent supporter of law enforcement, but occasionally it is its own worst enemy.
Two recent occasions: You don’t need to shoot 38 times to subdue someone unless you are a very poor marksman (“Baltimore Police release body camera footage of former arabber’s killing,” June 23). Realize, many of those bullets were into a corpse.
Secondly, shooting a 70-year-old woman armed with a knife is an overreaction (“After Baltimore Police fatally shot a 70-year-old, residents look for answers,” June 26). The encounter probably could have been avoided by simply backing off and giving space. According to the news, there was a crowd close by. Why not just turn to them and inquire if anyone knows this lady, which was certainly the case, and solicit their assistance in calming her down? This is called “building trust.”
