President Trump names members of US Naval Academy Board of Visitors

March 8, 2025 by The Baltimore Sun

President Donald Trump named four members to serve on the U.S. Naval Academy Board of Visitors, according to a post on his Truth Social.

The new members named Friday include Walt Nauta, Sean Spicer, Ronny Jackson and Derrick Van Orden.

Nauta, a former aide to Trump, saw legal proceedings against him dropped last month when a federal appeals court granted the Justice Department’s request to dismiss the case against Nauta and Carlos de Oliveiraover, a former Mar-a-Lago property manager, over the handling of classified documents at the end of Trump’s first presidential term.

Spicer, former White House press secretary under Trump, also served as the communications director for the Republican National Committee from 2011 to 2017 and as its chief strategist from 2015 to 2017.

Jackson, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral, now serves as the Republican U.S. representative for Texas’ 13th Congressional District. He was the president’s physician during the first Trump administration.

Van Orden, a Republican, represents Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House.

Last month, Trump ordered the immediate dismissal of the boards of visitors for the U.S. service academies, including the Naval Academy in Annapolis, referencing “Woke Leftist Ideologues.” Former President Joe Biden also removed members of the service academy boards when he took office in 2021.

The current board congressional appointees on the Navy’s Board of Visitors are senators Dan S. Sullivan (R-Alaska, and chairman), Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire), and Debra Fischer (R-Nebraska). The U.S. representatives on the board are Rob Wittman (R-Virginia and vice chairman), Scott Franklin (R-Florida), Jake Ellzey (R-Texas), Chris Deluzio (D-Pennsylvania) and Sarah Elfreth (D-Maryland).
