October 28, 2023 by Maryland Sports Blog

Tigers Win! The Tigers got their 3 win on the year this past Saturday against William & Mary. The Tigers have now won 2 ranked games on the road in the Shinnick era. They are now 3-4 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.

The Tigers fell behind early and trailed 17-3 at the half. The Tribe got on the board with a field goal by Cade Bonoffski. They followed that with a rushing touchdown by Lucas Martin. They capped their first half scoring with a Darius Wilson passing touchdown to Hollis Mathis

The Tigers lone scoring came from the reliable leg of Keegan Vaughn. In the second half it was all Towson. In the 3rd quarter the Tigers answered with 2 rushing touchdowns from Devin Matthews and Nathan Kent.

The Tigers took the lead with a field goal from Vaughn to make it 20-17. Nathan Kent had 2 passing touchdowns to Carter Runyon: 1 for 53 yards and 1 for 8 yards. The Tribe got another touchdown pass from Darius Wilson to Hollis Mathis.

Nathan Kent had a big day for Towson as he threw for 188 yards and had 19 completions. He had 2 touchdowns passes and no interceptions. For the Tribe, Darius Wilson also threw 2 touchdowns on 12 completions for 129 yards.

Devin Matthews had a high volume day as he ran for 117 yards on 20 carries for a touchdown. Nathan Kent added a rushing touchdown on 10 carries for 38 yards. Malachi Imoh got the majority of the touches for the Tribe and finished with 104 yards on 13 carries. Lucas Martin punched in their only rushing touchdown on the day.

Carter Runyon led Towson with 7 catches for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns. Hollis Mathis had a big day as well with 5 catches for 66 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Defensively, for Towson, Xavier Terry led the charge with 7 tackles and had a tackle for loss. Daniel Raymond and Mason Woods added tackles for loss as well. Rodney Roane Jr added 2 sacks on the day and a forced fumble. Lewis Onaje and Justin Toler added forced fumbles as well. Jesus Gibbs and Alijah Bivans both recovered fumbles. For his outstanding play, Rodney Roane was named CAA defensive player of the week.

For the Tribe, Kevin Jarrell led the team with 8 tackles and John Pius added the lone tackle for loss / sack. William and Mary did not force any fumbles or get an interpretation. The Tigers played mistake free football and it helped them earn another big road win.

The Tigers return home to the not so friendly confines of Johnny Unitas Stadium. The Tigers have lost all 3 home games this year and will need to big their A game. Their next opponent is the Delaware Blue Hens.

The Blue Hens are the top ranked team in the CAA. They come in with a 6-1 overall record and are unbeaten in conference play. Their only loss has been to Penn State on the road.

Their main quarterback this year has been Junior, Ryan O’Connor, a native of Easton Maryland. He has has had a big year for the Blue Hens with 1299 yards passing and 12 touchdowns. He got hurt and did not play last week against Hampton. Zach Marker, a senior transfer from Iowa Central CC, made his first career start. Marker didn’t have the best game but they still got the win. The Tigers will need to be ready for whoever is under center.

Their ground game is dominated by Marcus Yarns who has rushed for 637 yards and 9 touchdowns on the year. Kyron Crumby is another one to watch as he has 365 yards and 3 touchdowns to complement Yarns. The passing game is very balanced a lot of guys have found the end zone. Jordun Townsend, Chandler Harvin, Marcus Yarns and Kym Wimberly all have 2 receiving touchdowns. Townsend leads all receivers with 21 receptions for 325 yards.

The Blue Hens are a lot of really talented players on the defensive side of the football. Jackson Taylor leads the team with 64 tackles and has 7.5 tackles for loss on the year. Chase McGowan leads them with 3.5 sacks on the year and has 8.5 tackles for loss. Ty Davis leads the team with 2 interceptions. They have 6 other guys who have an interception on the year. The Tigers will need another mistake free football game to pull off the upset.

Kickoff from Baltimore is set for 1 pm at Johnny Unitas Stadium. GO TIGERS!
