Towson Falls to Maryland 38-6

September 7, 2023 by Maryland Sports Blog

Towson Falls to Maryland. Sets up start of conference play with Monmouth on Saturday

The Pete Shinnick era of Towson Football kicked off this past Friday. It did not go as planned as the Tigers dropped a 38-6 decision to the Terps in College Park. The Terps struck early with a rushing touchdown from Tulia Tagoviloa, who was also shaken up on the play after a big hit. The hit proved to not be that impactful as he would hit Corey Dyches, Jeshaun Jones and Kaden Prather all for TD’s throughout the game. He would finish the day with 260 yards and 3 touchdowns. Dyches led all receivers with 108 yards. On the ground the Terps Roman Hemby and Antwain Littleton did most of the damage on the ground. Hemby got into the end zone and finished the day with 58 yards on 12 carries.

Nathan Kent got his first start for the Tigers and while he did a great job of not turning the ball over, he’s still got room for improvement. He finished his day with 16 completions for 128 yards. D’Kendall James was the top target for the Tigers with 4 catches for 49 yards. On the ground Devin Matthews led the team in touches and yards while out rushing Nathan Kent and D’Ago Hunter.

Defensively for the Terps, Beau Brade led the team in tackles and Riyad Wilmont and Issac Bunyun both had sacks. For Towson, Mason Woods paced the defense with 8 total tackles while Jakari Patterson and Rodney Roane Jr both had TFL’s and Roane added a sack.

Keegan Vaugh supplied the scoring for the Tigers with 2 made field goals from 36 and 38 yards. The Terps used 2 kickers in Jack Howes, who missed a 45 yarder and Evan Johnson, who made a 24 yarder. The silver lining in all this is that despite the score the Tigers played hard and the score was not as bad as last year’s WVU game. If the offense can come together they can be a really good team all around.

Towson starts conference play this week with a big matchup against Monmouth. The Eagles dropped a shootout to the Tigers last year at home. The Eagles fell to FAU in their first game of the season by a score of 42-20. They were dominated through the air as former Texas and Nebraska QB Casey Thompson threw for 280 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Eagles found success through the air from Marquez McCray who threw for 249 yards and 2 scores.

McCray, a graduate transfer from Sacred Heart is their main man under center. They have some good offensive talent in Jaden Shirden and Jamie Barnes to help the ground game. Through the air they have a lot of 5th year guys and upperclassmen that can make an impact. Dymere Miller, TJ Speight, Assanti Kearney, Gavin Nelson and Dre Tucker all had a big impact on the passing game for the Eagles week 1. I expect some of them to set up to make big plays against the Tigers. Defensively for the Eagles, Ryan Moran leads the the defense in tackles and Jake Brown leads them in INT’s. Both of those guys will need to have a big day to keep the Tigers offense off the field. Game time is set for 6pm at Unitas Stadium. GO TIGERS!
