$40 Million Pro Bowler May Depart After the Season – Ravens, Chargers Top Fits?

$40 million Pro Bowler Josh Sweat may depart the Eagles after the 2024 season and Ravens, Chargers are among the potential next teams for him. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report made a list of top impending free agents, including Sweat who could find a new team immediately as soon as he becomes available. Originally selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Florida State product signed a three-year extension with the Philadelphia Eagles since becoming one of the more reliable pass rushers in the league. However, the Eagles probably won’t have the resources to bring him back on another deal which may force them to look in the upcoming draft for a new linebacker.

With Brandon Graham set to retire and Haason Reddick gone, the team may be looking into next year’s free agency to sign a couple of veterans even if it’s for a one-year deal. Nolan Smith is seeing more snaps but the Eagles can’t depend on him too long since he’s just starting to break into a starting role. Sweat didn’t develop into a full-time starter until 2021 but he has the durability to be a force that every defense needs on their roster. After only missing seven games as a rookie, he has missed four games but no more than two in a single season.

However, plenty of teams like the Ravens, Chargers should get ready to snatch him if he becomes available. Sweat will likely sign with a roster that offers the most after leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl despite losing against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Atrocious Defense in Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens constructed themselves a legitimate offensive firepower for quarterback Lamar Jackson to go all the way to Promise Land. However, they don’t have plenty of longevity on their defense to last deep into the postseason despite Kyle Van Noy and Roquan Smith doing all they can to keep the pass-rushing unit together. Baltimore lost several key free agents this past offseason including Jadeveon Clowney who led the team in sacks so the team is lacking some experience in there which could creep up this upcoming postseason. It doesn’t help the team’s secondary hasn’t been as durable as everyone anticipated.

Even though improving the pass rush won’t accommodate the pass defense, it should be considered to fix to give the other opposing quarterback little time in the pocket to find the open man. The Ravens signing Sweat should give the defense more balance and help guide them to a potential Super Bowl.

Winning in the Trenches

Meanwhile, as much as Jim Harbaugh loves the run game, he loves winning football games with an explosive defense. Khalil Mack has been a key contributor to this team’s pass-rushing unit but Joey Bosa has yet to replicate that success. Both of these stars are set for free agency next offseason after taking a reduced contract before the 2024 season. There’s no way the Chargers could sign both of these linebackers so this may force them to decide to extend one at least on a long-term deal.

Letting Bosa walk this upcoming offseason could allow the Chargers extra money to sign Sweat. Harbaugh would be open arms to this signing and this could be their last piece before this defense turns explosive.
