A Howard County police officer fatally struck a 93-year-old woman Thursday morning while driving in a Columbia parking lot, police said.
Police said the plainclothed, on-duty officer was pulling out of a parking space in an unmarked vehicle at Dobbin Center around 6:45 a.m. when he struck the woman as she was walking by.
She was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she later died, according to police.
Investigators said speed does not appear to have been a factor. The crash remains under investigation, and the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
