All-Pro Receiver Begs For New Team to “Rescue” Him

April 3, 2023 by Last Word On Pro Football

Stefon Diggs Trade

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs wants a trade, and the former All-Pro receiver took to Twitter to voice his frustrations. Late on Saturday night, Diggs tweeted out “Come and rescue me”, presumably referring to his desire to leave the Bills and join a new organization.

Comeeeeee anddddd rescue me…

Stefon Diggs Begs For A Trade: “Come And Rescue Me”

Why Diggs Is Frustrated

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Diggs ask for a trade. The Buffalo Bills first acquired Diggs prior to the start of the 2020 season, and his presence helped elevate Josh Allen into one of the best passers in the league. Over the past three years, Buffalo has been one of the best teams in football, but they have yet to make it over the hump. The team made it to the AFC Championship Game back in 2020, but couldn’t make it out of the divisional round in 2021 or 2022.

Diggs, now entering his age-30 season, is getting up there in age, and apparently doesn’t believe that the Bills have what it takes to make it to the Super Bowl for the first time since the Jim Kelly Era. Whether that is actually true or not remains to be seen, but Diggs’ tweet heavily implies that the organization has not done a good job of convincing him to believe in the future of this team.

Of course, just because Stefon Diggs wants a trade doesn’t mean that the Bills have to fulfill his request. In fact, it’s highly unlikely the Bills ship the receiver anywhere. Buffalo is in the midst of their Super Bowl window, and Diggs will be vital to the continued success of the organization. Even with Diggs on the roster, the team could use another receiver, as Gabriel Davis proved last year that he’s better off in a depth role. However, if Diggs makes enough of a fuss, perhaps the team would be willing to part with him for the right price.

Who Could Trade For Stefon Diggs?

It should go without saying that the Buffalo Bills will not trade Diggs to anybody that could ruin their chances of winning the Super Bowl in 2023. This basically rules out every team in the AFC, as Buffalo won’t want to make their path to the Super Bowl any more difficult than it has to be.

The lone exception to this rule is the Baltimore Ravens. While the Ravens could be a top team with Lamar Jackson, without him, they’re not going to be very good. In a world where Jackson is dealt, Baltimore will probably want a star receiver to pair with the rookie quarterback that they will inevitably draft. Diggs alone wouldn’t make the Ravens Super Bowl contenders without Jackson, so they might be willing to send the star receiver to Baltimore for a hefty price.

The teams in the NFC, however, are completely fair game. The New Orleans Saints clearly believe that they can contend in 2023, and using their usual salary cap magic, somehow have $14.3 million in cap space. Chris Olave is a superstar, but the rest of the depth chart is fairly untested. Michael Thomas will be back, but he’s still not healthy, so the Saints shouldn’t bet on him being a heavy contributor. Diggs and Olave would form one of the best receiver duos in football, and if Thomas happens to be healthy as well, then it’s hard to imagine any defense capable of stopping three superstar receivers.

The Carolina Panthers won’t win the Super Bowl in 2023, but they do need to create an environment that can foster the development of a young franchise quarterback. Stefon Diggs was crucial to Josh Allen becoming the player he is today, and perhaps he can do the same thing if acquired in a trade. Adam Thielen and D.J. Chark are fine receivers, but they don’t possess the same ceiling as Diggs.

Last, but certainly not least, is the New York Giants. Daniel Jones and company made it to the NFC Championship Game with Isaiah Hodgkins as their best receiver, so imagine what they could do with an actual star?
