Baltimore County’s school board voted to approve a new contract for sports officials Tuesday after previously rejecting it, potentially putting fall sports in jeopardy.
The existing contract providing officiating services for sports games expires Sept. 30. The new contract was awarded to the lowest bidding vendors, it says, and would last two years and 11 months.
In August, the board voted down the contract to secure sports officials for high school sports after a mysterious controversy over soccer referees. Eight vendors were on the contract, most for individual sports, like baseball or lacrosse. It estimated the current fiscal year would cost $830,000, though the total three-year contract would have had a maximum spending authority of nearly $2.5 million.
The board voted to approve the contract on Tuesday, with Rod McMillion, who represents District 7, voting against it and member Julie Henn, of District 5, recusing herself.
