Law enforcement officials on Saturday arrested a Baltimore murder suspect in Charlotte, North Carolina, days after he was mistakenly released from custody because of a procedural lapse in the extradition process.
Charles Anthony Boatwright, 55, was wanted in connection with the July killing of 56-year-old Randolph Smith in Southwest Baltimore’s Irvington neighborhood, police said.
Boatwright had been held in the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte since July while awaiting extradition to Maryland but was released Wednesday after the state failed to file a required governor’s warrant within the legal deadline, according to North Carolina officials.
Baltimore Police said Saturday that Boatwright has now been taken back into custody in Charlotte.
Smith was fatally shot on July 13 in the 3900 block of Frederick Avenue. Officers responding to reports of gunfire around 1:30 a.m. found him suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
