Baltimore Ravens Defensive Coordinator Zach Orr Redeems Himself in Win Against Division Rival

September 16, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Baltimore Ravens entered their Week 2 matchup against the Cleveland Browns with plenty of eyes on second-year defensive coordinator Zach Orr. After a tough loss last week against the Buffalo Bills, many fans wanted to see how Orr and his defense bounced back, and after a 41-17 victory, he hasn’t disappointed.

The Ravens defense performed well against the Browns offense, holding them to seventeen points while demonstrating the hard-hitting culture that shapes Ravens football. Orr’s ability to blend aggressive pass rushes and tight coverage allowed his unit to control the game from start to finish.

The Ravens dominated the game, and the numbers show just that. The defense recorded three sacks, one interception, and a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. Every phase of the defense contributed significantly, demonstrating how well Orr has gotten the unit performing.

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh likes what he sees from Orr’s defense.

“I wanted to see a defense that I believe we can be, a defense that we’ve been working to be, and we saw that a lot. We can get better and we’ll chase that too, but I thought the defense really stepped up and played a good football game,” Harbaugh said.

While it’s only early in the season, this performance suggests that Orr’s defensive philosophy could be taking hold. If the Ravens can maintain this intensity, they could have one of the league’s most disruptive defenses.

Individual Defensive Players That Stood Out

Roquan Smith

Star linebacker Roquan Smith was exceptional against the Browns. He managed to rack up 15 tackles, including three for a loss, while adding two quarterback hits that kept steady pressure on the Browns’ offense all game. His pursuit of Browns quarterback Joe Flacco led to an inaccurate throw that directly resulted in an interception by Nate Wiggins.

Smith’s best play of the night came when Ravens outside linebacker Tavius Robinson sacked Flacco, forcing a fumble that Smith recovered and returned 63 yards for a touchdown. His performance not only showcased his playmaking ability but also cemented his role as the leader of Baltimore’s defense.

Everybody was impressed by Smith’s performance, especially Rookie linebacker Teddye Buchanan

“Ro’s (Roquan) special, it’s like having a coach out there on the field, especially for a young guy like me. Ro makes all the difference on our defense, on our team as a leader, so all the credit in the world to him. He has done an amazing job leading this team,” Buchanan said.

Nate Wiggins

Cornerback Nate Wiggins delivered an incredible performance against the Browns, earning himself an initial PFF coverage grade of 91.2. He allowed just four receptions on eight targets for 15 yards, while forcing two incompletions. Wiggins capped off his great performance with an interception that he nearly returned for a pick-6.

Looking Ahead

After a tough Week 1 loss, the Ravens’ defense showed significant improvement against the Browns in Week 2. While there is still room for development, the adjustments made this week demonstrate that Baltimore is learning from early mistakes. The Ravens will have to maintain their consistency if they want to win that ever-elusive Super Bowl.
