After spending just one season in Washington, the Commanders could trade defensive end Dorance Armstrong before the 2025 regular season. Reportedly, the team is discussing potential trades before the season starts, and one of those players may include Armstrong, so they could target Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson. It’s easy to see why this might become a move that makes sense for Washington, they need to maximize the contract of quarterback Jayden Daniels and put themselves in a winning roster before they need to recoup their financial resources to extend the rookie when he’s eligible for an extension. It’s sensible that the Commanders are signing top-notch athletes like wide receiver Deebo Samuel to one-year deals, since they want to ensure they have financial resources for the longevity of their organization.
Meanwhile, head coach Dan Quinn got free agent Dorance Armstrong last year, intending to be a capable replacement for Montez Sweat and Chase Young. After losing Dante Fowler Jr., the Commanders’ defensive pass rush might not be the same since he was the sack leader for this unit. Originally selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Kansas State product became one of the most versatile defensive ends for the Cowboys, recording a breakout of more than eight sacks in 2022. However, even though his sack totals have been decreasing, he always finds a way to make an impact against opposing offenses.
If the Commanders decide to trade the defensive end, then these four teams could take a chance on him.

Potential Destinations
Baltimore Ravens
While the Ravens could be looking at the free agent market to sign some guys on one-year deals, they could take a chance on Dorance Armstrong in a trade. Following Michael Pierce’s retirement, the Ravens have yet to find a capable replacement to keep this run defense intact, especially for this season, where they strangely had one of the worst pass rushes in the league. Broderick Washington and Travis Jones can’t single-handedly carry the trenches unit behind Nnamdi Madubuike, but the presence of Dorance Armstrong could change the conversation to bolster the unit.
Kansas City Chiefs
Meanwhile, it’s never a bad idea to add more juice to the defense for the Kansas City Chiefs. Pro Football Focus believes re-signing Mike Danna won’t do the Chiefs justice this upcoming season and could add a veteran before the 2025 regular season. Chris Jones is one of the league’s best defensive tackles, but trading for Armstrong would put them over excellent numbers. Armstrong won’t start over George Karlaftis or Charles Omenihu, but if Danna can’t perform up to standards, they could trade for the potential trade candidate to save the outside pass rush.
Los Angeles Chargers
However, the Los Angeles Chargers are looking to add one more run-stuffer to their defense. Despite them signing Da’Shawn Hand, he won’t carry the defense like they saw out of Poona Ford. They know it was a massive blow to lose Ford, but trading for a presence like Armstrong could be a significant upgrade to this roster, even for Khalil Mack, who is probably in his last year with the team.
New Orleans Saints
Luckily, the New Orleans Saints were able to pinch pennies into the roster to re-sign Chase Young and trade for Davon Godchaux. However, they could use an upgrade over Bryan Breese. Cameron Jordan isn’t getting any younger and the presence of Armstrong should lessen the stress of the potential struggles of this defense.
