Breaking: Former First Rounder Fifth-Year Option May Signal Trade

April 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

chris olave fifth year

The New Orleans Saints are bringing back former first-rounder Chris Olave on a fifth year option ahead of this year’s NFL Draft. According to a report, the team is securing Olave for the immediate future, but it doesn’t mean the Saints won’t consider trading him. The wide receiver has been in several trade rumors, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he ends up requesting to move to a new roster. It’s been a chaotic offseason for the Saints, who are scrambling to find answers for their next capable signal-caller while Derek Carr sits out potentially for the entire campaign.

Olave was already in trade discussions before the Carr injury, but it looks like the Saints will be left with no choice and rebuild. General Manager Mickey Loomis can’t seem to swallow his pride and get this organization on the right track. It’s something that Olave might consider since he probably doesn’t want to stay on a team that isn’t going to the playoffs anytime soon. There are high hopes for new head coach Kellen Moore, but no one should expect any change as long as Loomis influences the decisions within the organization.

Loomis needs to let the team start from scratch, and even though they want to keep Olave, it might be best to part ways. The former Ohio State product will attract a lot of interest across the league during the NFL Draft, and these three teams could make an offer.

Possible Next Teams

Los Angeles Chargers

To no one’s surprise, the Los Angeles Chargers should still be in the market for a wide receiver before the 2025 season. They’ve done phenomenally well drafting wideout Ladd McConkey, who is becoming quarterback Justin Herbert’s favorite weapon. However, no one should anticipate the team getting much farther with the offense they have now, despite signing veteran Mike Williams to a one-year deal. He’s way past his prime days, and he isn’t going to outdo McConkey by a miracle.

DJ Chark and Quentin Johnston were among the worst list of pass catchers that were on this roster last year. Chark is gone, but having Johnston still on the roster could hold the offense back. The Chargers must figure out sooner rather than later to help Herbert before he gets older. The team should trade for Chris Olave, who will take this depleting unit to the next level.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, there’s no such thing as too many wide receivers for Baltimore. The Ravens signed DeAndre Hopkins this offseason, but on a one-year deal. No one should anticipate him to last more than two years in the league, as he probably wants to win at least one ring and retire. The team should boost those chances by trading for Olave to help the aerial attack for Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman.

Among these talents, Flowers is a little more consistent, so Olave’s size and hands could fit the mold to make it to the Super Bowl.

Kansas City Chiefs

This would be a no-brainer trade for the Kansas City Chiefs. The team has two promising receivers in Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, but both have legal troubles outside the field, and it’s hard to imagine they will have a job if they can’t stay out of trouble. Marquise Brown, like Hopkins, is only looking for a Super Bowl run, so he isn’t the Chiefs’ long-term answer.

Chris Olave provides more stability to last for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
