Breaking: “Severed” Cowboys Relationship May Mean Sudden Departure

December 13, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite being ready for a return, the relationship between the Dallas Cowboys and cornerback Trevon Diggs has plummeted, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if a release happened this upcoming week. According to reports, the expectation was that Diggs would play in the Sunday Night Showdown against the Minnesota Vikings, but the Cowboys aren’t activating him for the game. The cornerback was ready and in the best shape this 2025 campaign after missing seven games, but Dallas is deciding to bench him for the matchup. This comes in the wake of the head coach, Brian Schottenheimer’s, comments previously about his potential return.

“He has got to show us he’s ready to do everything the right way,” Schottenheimer said. Interestingly, he made this vague statement, which means that Diggs continues to be more of an issue than a solution. It’s still unclear about the relationship between Dallas and Diggs, which has soured over this past season, but ever since trading Micah Parsons, the cornerback has been seemingly uninterested at practice and pre-game.

Sources: #Cowboys All-Pro CB Trevon Diggs will not play Sunday vs the Vikings.

This comes after what was described to me as a “great week of practice,” while multiple sources tell me the relationship between Diggs and the organization has “soured” and “been severed.”

Breaking: “Severed” Cowboys Trevon Diggs Relationship May Mean Sudden Departure

While the Cowboys may wait to release him after the 2025 season, it might make sense to give him the choice sooner rather than later. Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Alabama product was having a promising start in the league. Despite recording his first All-Pro in his rookie year and back-to-back Pro Bowls, it hasn’t been the same for Diggs.

Now, the Cowboys have a huge decision to make. Dallas must find a way to restructure his contract and cut him, or become creative to trade him to a team that needs a cornerback this upcoming offseason. A trade seems likely since the Cowboys still have Diggs under contract through 2028, and these teams could be interested.

Possible Trade Suitors

Green Bay Packers

While the Green Bay Packers would benefit from a veteran presence of Diggs in the secondary unit, Diggs joining Green Bay with Micah Parsons makes sense. The cornerback is too disengaged, and ever since the Packers parted ways with Jaire Alexander, Green Bay’s secondary room needs some salvaging. Diggs isn’t the perfect trade candidate, but Dallas might be willing to do the cornerback a favor.

This will only happen if the Cowboys get a proper future draft pick. Diggs won’t change the secondary overnight, but the reunion of him and Parsons might see the two thrive in a new scenery.

Washington Commanders

Meanwhile, if the Cowboys release Diggs instead of trading him, many should expect Dan Quinn to target the cornerback. Diggs was at his peak when Quinn was the defensive coordinator for America’s team. With Marshon Lattimore likely to depart since his latest injury, the Commanders are in the market for a cornerback this upcoming offseason. The secondary room hasn’t been the same either way, and they could’ve done better than signing Jonathan Jones this past offseason.

Diggs would become the latest former Cowboy to join Dorance Armstrong and Tyler Biadasz in a new group, which is likely the route that the cornerback could take.

Baltimore Ravens

After trading Jaire Alexander and suddenly taking a break from football, the Baltimore Ravens should be in the market for a cornerback this upcoming offseason. This means Diggs could join former Cowboys cornerback Chidobe Awuzie in Baltimore if they keep him. The Ravens’ secondary hasn’t been on fire except for Marlon Humphrey, Nate Wiggins and Kyle Hamilton, but Diggs could make some type of impact if he can stay healthy.
