The first-year offensive coordinator might be one and done in Baltimore.

The coaching staff of the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens continued to generate interest on Black Monday.

First, the Washington Commanders requested to interview two of their top defensive assistants for their head coach vacancy. Then, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers requested permission to interview Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken for their head coach vacancies.

Monken is in his first year as the Ravens’ playcaller and designer after replacing Greg Roman last offseason and has had a profound impact. The seasoned offensive coach has been the architect of some of the most balanced offenses, both in college and the NFL, for the past four years. That includes for the two-time national championship-winning University of Georgia. He turned former walk-on Stetson Bennett into a Heisman Trophy finalist and has Lamar Jackson poised to win his second league MVP.

Under his guidance, the Ravens evolved their passing attack resulting in the most balanced and complete offense of they’ve had in the Jackson era. The three-time Pro Bowler’s growth and maturation as a passer in particular under Monken has been phenomenal. That makes him an ideal candidate for the Panthers and Chargers, who both have young gifted franchise quarterbacks in Bryce Young and Justin Herbert.

Monken isn’t the only member of the Ravens organization that the Panthers reportedly have their eye on to fill one of their two major leadership vacancies. They also relieved Scott Fitterer of his duties as the team’s general manager. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, among their eight interview requests to find a new head of their front office is Ravens’ Vice President of Football Administration Nick Matteo.

Matteo has been with the Ravens since 2019 overseeing every area of football administration, including day-to-day management of the salary cap as well as general roster transactions. According to the official team website, Matteo has, “negotiated the contracts of all 37 draft picks during that time, plus several free agents, and has worked on the extensions for a number of key Ravens, including most recently All-Pro (tight end) Mark Andrews.”
