Chargers, Chiefs May Pursue 3,800-Yard Free Agent

The Los Angeles Chargers or Kansas City Chiefs may pursue 3,800-yard free agent wide receiver, Corey Davis before week two of this regular season. Bleacher Report published an article laying out every NFL Team’s needs and weaknesses before week two starts. The source is urging the Chargers to add the veteran wideout after he didn’t play last season after a surprise retirement. Davis is back in the league after his reinstatement so he’s looking for an opportunity with Los Angeles already thin at the wide receiver position.

It shouldn’t surprise many that many reports suggest an addition at the wideout position since they are taking a blow. DJ Chark is already going to the injured reserve even though they have Ladd McConkey showing promise after leading the way after seven targets. Many should expect him to be their main go-to receiver for many weeks, even though Jim Harbaugh wants this team to focus on running the ball. They were successful in that realm after Joe Alt didn’t allow a single pressure from star pass rusher Maxx Crosby after yesterday’s win.

The Chargers still have Justin Herbert, who is a better player when he’s throwing darts, and someone like Davis could be another reliable receiver to catch those. Davis may not be the biggest signing but it’s enough to fill a role similar to Chark’s to give some insurance behind Quentin Johnston and journeyman Joshua Palmer. The offense must develop a strong passing attack if they want to go for a deep postseason run. However, the running game can only do so much that they want to make sure Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins are still fresh.

Kansas City may still look to add depth between the speedsters of Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice.

A Super Bowl Revival

There was concern this offseason regarding the receiver depth of the Chiefs, especially since Marquise Brown sustained an injury that will hold him out for a couple of weeks. Kansas City brought back JuJu Smith-Schuster after his disappointing stint with the Patriots to replace bust Kadarius Toney. This leaves Mecole Hardman and Skyy Moore to be around as reserves to help Patrick Mahomes in the passing game. It’s clear they need more depth and Davis could be that guy to stick around in the rotation.

He doesn’t add anything spectacular but a one-year contract with the team should get him back in the groove. Davis probably won’t stay with the Chiefs longer than one season but it’s a one-off opportunity to showcase his abilities with one of the best offenses in the league.

Other Possible Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

Many should anticipate that Nelson Agholor will continue to struggle this year after already miscommunicating with Lamar Jackson on a drive. Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman can only go far as Jackson utilizes them as the season progresses. Running back Justice Hill was a reliable asset for quick passes so it’s clear that’s the type of wideout the Ravens need. Derrick Henry isn’t filling that role as he’s reliable when the team is near the red zone.

Davis isn’t beating out Bateman or Flowers but some competition between him and Agholor in rotation situations should give the offense some life.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers need immediate help at the receiver position after their disastrous performance against the Saints. Bryce Young couldn’t find any answers even after the addition of Diontae Johnson and rookie Xavier Legette. It wouldn’t be the worst idea to kick the tires of someone like Davis to provide some help. Johnson’s contract expires after the season and Adam Thielen is only getting older so some short-term relief could give this team a fighting chance.

Dallas Cowboys

Even after an impressive game against the Browns, the Cowboys still put up more field goals than touchdowns. This isn’t acceptable if this is the route Dallas will take if they want a chance in the postseason. CeeDee Lamb can do so much to carry the passing game while guys like Brandin Cooks and Jalen Tolbert will need to step up. Tolbert didn’t make any noise in his new role but the addition of Davis should provide some relief.
