Chiefs, Chargers Favorites To Sign Released Offensive Weapon

The Kansas City Chiefs or Los Angeles Chargers are favorites to sign released offensive weapon, Logan Thomas this upcoming season. According to a report, the 49ers are moving on from Thomas after originally bringing him in to complement George Kittle throughout his NFL journey. The tight end spent the last four seasons with the Commanders, serving as their starter after recording 1,685 yards and 14 touchdowns in 52 games and 49 starts. San Francisco is in a tight spot right now since their other backup tight ends are departing for the Atlanta Falcons.

However, it makes sense why the 49ers are moving on after Thomas suffered a hamstring injury in the early stages of training camp and has been missing practice. Thomas may find a new gig before the regular season but he is getting older so there may not be a lot of time for him to be a journeyman in his career. He could still be an excellent addition to any roster that needs depth once he heals and is back to being consistent again. However, injuries have been hindering his abilities to his full potential following his breakout year he was having in 2020.

The Chiefs have been active this offseason after drafting Ben Sinnott early in this year’s draft which is surprising everyone. They realize that Travis Kelce‘s days are coming to an end even though he claims he isn’t going anywhere. Kansas City is stocking up and they should probably consider a veteran like Thomas to help mentor Sinnott into a breakout player. However, the tight end position isn’t the biggest need for the Chargers but there’s an open spot for him.

Hayden Hurst and Will Dissly will be the front two starters but they could always bring in Thomas as a pass-blocker.

Other Possible Destinations

New Orleans Saints

Juwan Johnson is recovering from injury so the depth for a tight end is the biggest need for the Saints even though the receiver outlook for Derek Carr looks slim. They’re depending on Taysom Hill to make his debut in various roles this season but they shouldn’t count on it. Foster Moreau may be their only option with an old Jimmy Graham so the Saints should play the safe route of bringing Thomas in on a cheap contract. He’ll most likely accept any type of deal as long as he doesn’t have an active market from other teams.

The hope is that Carr can get a weapon with experience and so far since it’s only Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed as his only reliable weapons, Thomas is their last resort. He isn’t a receiver by any means but he gives off those vibes and can make a couple of plays to help Carr out.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers are constructing one of the best offenses since the Lions have come out of nowhere since last season. Bryce Young may be able to lead this offense far this season with Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen but to have a strong core tight end group will put the icing on the cake. They have Ja’Tavion Sanders who’s been impressive at training camp but Thomas would be an excellent addition for depth. Thomas could probably come in for certain plays or whenever the team is performing play-action plays in the end zone or is near it.

Baltimore Ravens

Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely have a lot of anticipation this season as they believe they’ll bring electricity to the field. However, Lamar Jackson enjoys running this offense on play-action plays which requires more than one tight end on the field. It doesn’t mean they need a third but it would be nice to get both Likely and Thomas on the same field to give Andrews some breathing room to give Jackson his guy on the field for passing plays.
