Chiefs, Panthers Could Target 3,900-Yard Cut Candidate

August 13, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Kansas City Chiefs or Carolina Panthers could target 3,900-yard running back cut candidate, Jamaal Williams before this upcoming season. According to a report, a source indicates that the Saints could move on from the veteran if they don’t see any improvement. This comes after his unimpressive performance in there even though the Saints were able to find a way to win in the fourth quarter with Spencer Rattler being clutch. Williams was only able to log six carries for 20 yards and caught only one target for one yard.

The issue could be that he needs more snaps over Alvin Kamara this season but that seems impossible even though they count. However, Williams would gain the leverage if Kamara suffers an injury then that would be his opportunity to take over starting duties to prove his talent. He got on the field in their preseason win over the Cardinals before Jordan Mims and James Robinson so the Saints probably have to watch closely. Williams may be in the position to win the No. 2 position to backup Kamara after Kendre Miller is dealing with a hamstring injury that is keeping him out of action.

After having a season to remember for the Lions in 2022, he hasn’t been producing the same results but the Chiefs and Panthers could use someone like him. The Chiefs have an unreliable Clyde Edwards-Helaire who is backing up Isiah Pacheco so it may be safe to get some competition so they have a consistent running back to be ready to take some snaps. However, the Panthers could use him as well since Rashaad Penny is retiring and Jonathon Brooks needs a couple of years to become a proven backfield threat. It would be a nice addition for Chuba Hubbard as a potential new duo.

Other Potential Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens are still looking for a backup to help Derrick Henry with the number of snaps that they’re planning on giving him this season. However, he isn’t able-bodied anymore to receive the same ball carries as he was able to so it’s safe to get a reliable backup. Williams is nowhere near the level of Henry but gives him some breathing room and the right opportunity for Williams to get some snaps behind one of the best offensive lines in the league. Williams was able to thrive in a Lions offense in 2022 and with Henry’s blocking, there’s no reason why he wouldn’t be successful in John Harbaugh’s system.

With Lamar Jackson’s mobility, Williams can probably single-handedly be the running back who can be a reliable pass catcher. Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins were the duo last season with the Ravens which didn’t work out so the new Henry and Williams will probably produce something new for this firepower offense.

Dallas Cowboys

There was huge talk about the Cowboys going all-in this upcoming season, especially in the offseason. However, none of those two things will look to be happening since they haven’t been able to figure out what they’re going to do with extending Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. The backfield still looks weak even though they’re bringing back Ezekiel Elliott to the locker room. Williams probably won’t provide star power but he could produce quality insurance to keep this run offense driving.

Elliott can’t handle all the dirty work anymore like he was in his rookie year so Williams could benefit them.

Los Angeles Chargers

Jim Harbaugh needs to work a miracle to move this offense in the direction where Justin Herbert can lead the team to the playoffs again. It doesn’t look like it’ll happen with their passing game while they were only able to sign DJ Chark in free agency. However, they do have a promising Ladd McConkey but Quentin Johnston and Joshua Palmer don’t provide anything special to back up his talent. Williams doesn’t possess the same qualities and could be an efficient pass catcher even though he’s just a running back.

Dobbins and Edwards as the new duo don’t provide the offense some long-term relief so it should make sense why they have to consider a new running back like Williams. They both have a long list of injuries so it’s easy to assume Williams would be the perfect missing piece to give this offense a running chance.
