Cowboys Named a Landing Spot for Former Super Bowl Champion

June 13, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Dallas Cowboys named a landing spot for former Super Bowl champion free agent, Cam Akers this summer. According to a report, America’s team may be looking for one more running back to add to the list after signing several this offseason. Tony Pollard is on to other heights with the Titans so that means they had to get a new playmaker in the backfield. However, they were able to bring back Ezekiel Elliott while having Rico Dowdle as their one-two punch.

They were looking to sign just about any running back they could bring in for cheap. Royce Freeman is a part of the backfield too to compete with Deuce Vaughn for the No. 3 spot but he may win the job due to Dallas trying out Vaughn at the receiver position. However, Dallas executive Vice President Stephen Jones always speaks about how talent acquisition is a year-round thing. The Cowboys may add one more running back to beef up the competition at the position before the upcoming season.

Bleacher Report says there are still intriguing names on the market like Dalvin Cook, Kareem Hunt and Latavius Murray. It’s still fair to speculate that the Cowboys will be exploring their options by taking a look at the available backs. However, Akers could be the realistic option considering the injury history that may be scaring away potential suitors. It’s odd for a 25-year-old to already have a huge track record of injuries but he could be a steal on a low-risk, veteran-minimum contract.

Dallas has surprisingly not drafted any running in this year’s draft so this means they’re focusing on the market. A fading Elliott is leading this group so they need some depth help to keep rotating the backfield. Akers could take over as a top option this season.

Other Potential Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens are giving a heavy workload to new running back Derrick Henry which usually doesn’t end well. Baltimore has been seeing most running backs drop like flies this past season, including this offseason. They were dealing with plenty of injuries at the position last season with Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins. Baltimore did not bring any of them back and decided to sign one of the most durable backs.

However, Henry has an excellent track record of injuries so they wouldn’t lose anything if they sign Cam Akers. He isn’t durable at all but it gives the Ravens another option. He could be a rotational running back after Keaton Mitchell suffered one of the scariest injuries last year.

New Orleans Saints

It isn’t the biggest need for the Saints but one would think about the trade rumors floating around Alvin Kamara. They still have a strong backfield with Jamaal Williams backing up Kamara but they still need a solid No. 3 playmaker. Akers signing on to the Saints wouldn’t make them lose anything but would give them another cheap option. He doesn’t have starter potential but if they’re looking to trade Kamara, they may as well bring in him a rotational piece.

Los Angeles Chargers

Jim Harbaugh is focusing on the running game this season while avoiding any moves to improve the passing field. Dobbins and Edwards bring some promise but they have a long record of injuries. Akers has the same thing but if all three of these running backs get fully healthy this summer then they could be the new dangerous trio in the league. If one goes down with injury then all they would need to do is keep rotating.

Kansas City Chiefs

Many were scratching their head when they kept Clyde Edwards-Helaire rather than Jerick McKinnon who was more effective as a back and pass-catcher. McKinnon was one of the most reliable for the Chiefs but they’re not bringing him back so a realistic choice would be Akers. He doesn’t look bright on paper but he can bring the Super Bowl experience he has to add to Kansas City’s backfield. Isiah Pacheco will be the starter for the next decade but it’s never too late to add depth behind Edwards-Helaire.
