Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will coach his third Super Bowl on Sunday. Although his name has frequently surfaced over the years for head coaching jobs, two teams are reportedly pursuing him for a lateral move.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bieniemy is a “prime candidate” for another offensive coordinator role with the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders.
The Ravens parted ways with Greg Roman after finishing 16th in total offense this season. Their scoring rank dropped in each of his seasons (first, seventh, 17th, 19th) at the helm.
Washington fired Scott Turner after failing to rank higher than 20th in points or total yards for the fifth straight season. The Commanders face quarterback uncertainty after a sloppy season from offseason acquisition Carson Wentz.
Per The Washington Post‘s Nicki Jhabvala, Bieniemy said Monday he hasn’t taken any interviews for an offensive coordinator job. However, he interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts’ head coaching vacancy and “thought it went great.”
“As far as the offensive coordinator stuff, right now I am where my feet are,” Bieniemy said. “And right now, I’m focused on helping us to win this game this weekend.”
Bieniemy has helped steer an offensive juggernaut since Kansas City promoted him from running backs coach to offensive coordinator in 2018. While onlookers have often thought that success would lead to a head coaching role, the opportunity has continually eluded him.
Per Jhabvala, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said Bieniemy would “make an awesome head coach.”
