Former First Rounder Could Revive Career After Injury in Trade – Ravens, Chiefs Should Be Interested

December 11, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

greg newsome injury trade

Former first-rounder cornerback Greg Newsome could revive his career after injury in a trade to a new team this upcoming offseason. According to several reports, after waiving Kadarius Toney, the Cleveland Browns officially placed the cornerback on IR, ending his 2024 campaign. The Browns will likely head toward another rebuilding offseason since losing Deshaun Watson to a brutal injury. Still, journeyman Jameis Winston hasn’t been doing anything special to prove he could be the long-term starter.

Winston has his moments but it’s no guarantee the Browns will head to the postseason for the next few years. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if the Browns put him on the trading block, and it shouldn’t be too long before he starts garnering interest regardless of his injury. Originally selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Northwestern product brought in 37 tackles and nine passes defended all through 12 games. Newsome would get better each year after recording his first interception last year but he hasn’t been doing anything where a team could give a potential long-term extension.

Earlier this offseason, the Cleveland Browns exercised Newsome’s fifth-year option after being a part of several trade rumors. These talks could easily pick back up at the right price this upcoming offseason. It would be a safe bet for his career to head for a team that could bring out the best in him. Here is why the Ravens, Chiefs could be potential trade fits for him this upcoming March.

Redeeming the Ravens

Despite losing several winnable games this season, the Baltimore Ravens find themselves falling in the playoff picture. Even though they’ll make the postseason, it doesn’t look good as far as their chances to make a deep run. However, the offense is looking like a team that wants to win alongside a mobile quarterback, Lamar Jackson who wants to keep throwing the football to give wide receivers opportunities. The defense hasn’t been replicating that same energy the offense brings after having several matchups end up in shootouts.

After losing several key free agents like Geno Stone in the secondary, the Ravens lost a lot of chemistry in the process. Marlon Humphrey continues to be a keystone player for the entire secondary but Brandon Stephens, Kyle Hamilton and Marcus Williams haven’t been keeping up the pace. Newsome might not provide much of any difference but his presence to get a couple of snaps could provide some much-needed separation in the secondary depth. The Ravens could sign him on a “prove it” deal to see what type of plays he can produce to stop the opposing wideouts.

Sneed’s Afterlife

The Kansas City Chiefs do not look like a roster that should only have one loss this season despite coming in clutch in several matchups. However, this could all but come back to haunt them when the games count the most in the postseason. Patrick Mahomes isn’t looking like himself while Travis Kelce looks like he’ll be the latest Chief to retire after this year. Despite that, the Chiefs lost several wide receivers and made up for that by trading for DeAndre Hopkins.

The defensive secondary has been making critical plays to keep this team in several games. After l0sing L’Jarius Sneed to the Titans, Trent McDuffie may be the next great cornerback for the roster despite losing Jaylen Watson to a brutal season-ending injury. With the potential of losing Justin Reid, the Chiefs should continue to add more talent to their secondary this upcoming free agency. Nazeeh Johnson has been a bust which is why Newsome could be a temporary fix for next year.
