Former Super Bowl Champion is a Cut Candidate – Ravens, Chargers Top Fits

darious williams cut candidate

Former Super Bowl champion cornerback Darious Williams is a cut candidate this upcoming offseason. According to a few reports, the Los Angeles Rams could wind up releasing Williams since his production has been depleting. To no surprise, Williams is aging so he didn’t have his best campaign last year recording his lowest PFF defensive grade (59.9). Originally selected as an undrafted rookie in 2018, the former UAB product began his NFL career battling for a backup position in Baltimore before he got his first stint with the Rams.

He never made an impact until certain special players in 2020 where he caught an interception in the wild-card against quarterback Russell Wilson. Despite suffering an ankle injury, Williams made an impact to help the Rams earn their first Super Bowl under the Sean McVay era where he notched eight tackles. It was enough for the Jaguars to sign him for a three-year deal but he never made actual noise during his two seasons with them but came back to the Rams for a second stint. Williams got another three-year contract but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy which was brutal since Los Angeles brought him in to provide relief for Tre’Davious White who has the same issues.

The latest stint won’t help his chances to stay on the team so perhaps, the Rams could release him to save some type of money. They don’t need to but after trading White last season, it’s possible the team is heading towards a rebuild since on the offense the future is bleak with quarterback Matthew Stafford who could be traded next month.

Bolstering the Ravens Secondary

Before free agency begins, the Ravens only have two reliable cornerbacks in Marlon Humphrey and first-round pick Nate Wiggins. Brandon Stephens had one of the worst seasons so no one should expect him to return while they could search to fill the hole. The Ravens had a hard time attempting to stop easy passes in the aerial attack which was a key reason why they lost easy games. However, the team doesn’t have the financial liberty to get the best available secondary piece so they will have to budget wisely.

Baltimore could release Humphrey since he carries a huge cap hit toward the salary. Whatever happens, they need to figure it out quickly while they continue to play in a competitive AFC. The Ravens having a capable defense might be what it comes down to when looking for the final push in the AFC Conference. Williams might not get all the right spots but he will easily fit into a bigger role than he did in his first stint with the Ravens.

New Defensive Talent

As of this posting, the Los Angeles Chargers will probably lose plenty of defensive back talent this offseason, including Derwin James and Kristian Fulton. There’s a chance they could re-sign Fulton to a new deal since they have the money for it but James had one of the more underwhelming seasons last year. After extending Elijah Molden, the team should take it to the next level in boosting the team’s secondary.

Signing a guy like Williams if the Rams release him should give the entire unit a mentor. Tarheeb Still is adjusting to the league after having a decent year making splash plays but he’s not ready for a full-time role.
