Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Friday, Jan. 16.
Boys basketball
Oakland Mills 68, Centennial 32: The Scorpions (11-1) put forth a dominant performance on both ends of the floor. Hayes Bishop led the way with 16 points, while Keegan Rembert added 12 points. Nine different Oakland Mills players scored. For Centennial (2-9), Tim Ju and Jason Wang had six points each.
Reservoir 63, Wilde Lake 61: The Gators (5-7, 2-3 Summit Division) outlasted the Wildecats in a thriller. Jackson Snoots filled the stat sheet with 13 points, five assists and five rebounds, and hit the game-winning basket at the buzzer. For Wilde Lake (0-11, 0-5 Summit), Benny Eagan scored a game-high 27 points.
Glenelg 60, Long Reach 58: The Gladiators (5-3, 3-0 Sierra Division) topped the Lightning in a close one. Steven Mbuyamba finished with 10 points and scored the go-ahead basket with under five seconds remaining. Colin Kryder (11), Brett Barney (11) and Matthew Tolle (10) also finished in double figures. For Long Reach (6-8, 2-3 Sierra), Josh Hurd led the charge with 25 points and double-digit rebounds, shooting 74% from the floor. Lamar Atkinson added 18 points.
Hammond 72, Howard 51: The Golden Bears (8-6) won their fourth game in a row led by 17 points from Joshua Terry, 12 of which came in the third quarter. Jackson Givens added 15 points, while Pete Yarnell contributed 14, including four 3-pointers. Darius Daniels and Jacob Hill each finished with 10. For Howard (4-7), Justin Booth finished with a team-high 14 points.
Girls basketball
Howard 57, Hammond 14: The Lions (9-3) held the Golden Bears to a season-low scoring output. Kelsey Wimmer scored a team-high 13 points, while Maggie McCarthy and Kadirah Carroll each added 11.
River Hill 47, Marriotts Ridge 46: The Hawks (3-7, 1-4 Summit Division) earned their first division win of the season led by 20 points from Olivia Creighton. Grace Mathews added 15 points. For Marriotts Ridge (7-5, 2-2 Summit), Katie Leader had 15 points and five steals. Vestina Davidonyte added 12 points, while Peyton Albert had 10.
Glenelg 61, Long Reach 33: The Gladiators (7-4, 2-1 Sierra Division) responded from their first county loss of the season. Freshman Penelope Garcia scored a career-high 20 points, highlighted by six 3s. MJ Dabiri added 16 points. For Long Reach (4-9, 1-3 Sierra) Jaiden Bryant finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
