“I Pray This Isn’t The End” Chiefs Standout Hopeful for Return – Likely to Join Chargers, Ravens

justin reid hopeful return

Kansas City Chiefs standout safety Justin Reid is hopeful to return to the team despite the brutal loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. According to his Twitter, Reid gave his flowers to the organization and hopes the team will find a way to extend him but he made it known to give thanks if he doesn’t return. Originally selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, it’s unclear if that was his farewell message to the team but if it is, he will have a heavy interest market with plenty of bidders wanting his services. The Chiefs are in a difficult place with their salary cap so they don’t have the funds to retain most of their stars while figuring out a way to pay DeAndre Hopkins, Marquise Brown, Nick Bolton and Trey Smith who will all become free agents as well.

The assumption is that Reid will join a new roster this offseason that pays him the most money. He already has two Super Bowls under his belt so the right contract might be the only thing he cares about since he’s been a part of a winning culture after leaving the Houston Texans. Reid is an impactful player who can play anywhere on defense and has the mechanisms that every defense desires but the Chiefs have quietly prepping for his departure. It seems former second-rounder Bryan Cook who caught an interception in the Super Bowl and Jaden Hicks who will likely take over the secondary unit.

It doesn’t leave any room for Reid but he could find a new home with the Chargers, Ravens this offseason.

Cashing out Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers spent the 2024 offseason rebuilding the ground game and defensive trenches which paid off but they have to find a pour a little more in other departments. The pass defense was probably the best last season but that didn’t hold into the postseason since Alohi Gilman suffering an injury had an impact on that success. It was on Derwin James Jr. to hold down the fort, however, it didn’t pave the way to win in the wild card.

They brought in Marcus Maye and Ja’Sir Taylor had some starts but they went down with an injury. Perhaps, they could use someone like Justin Reid since he’s already in numerous rumors he may sign with the Chargers. He might be an intriguing piece to help alongside James.

Finding the Cash Flow

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens will need to figure out how they can afford a new safety this offseason. This will likely take letting cornerback Brandon Stephens walk this free agency and releasing Marcus Williams. Ar’Darius Washington did phenomenally well in the secondary adjustment midseason when head coach John Harbaugh made the switch and benched Williams. However, the safety department is aging and veteran Marlon Humphrey will need help.

There have been rumors the Ravens may be forced to release Humphrey as he’s a cap casualty but that wouldn’t make sense if they want to sign Reid. These two pairing up could boost much-needed relief in the air attack while Kyle Hamilton carves out a higher ceiling next season.
