Injuries Overshadow Ravens Week 1 Win

September 11, 2023 by Last Word On Pro Football

Ravens Injuries

The Baltimore Ravens started an important 2023 campaign with a 25-9 win over the Houston Texans. It was their 15th 1-0 start since 2000. It was also their 19th home opener win since 2000. Monday should be the start of a pleasant and happy week for Ravens fans after getting off to a good start, especially with a share of first place right away. However, the win had its fair share of hiccups. The offense had some nice moments but was ugly for the most part. It was mired in mistakes, penalties, and turnovers. The defense did hold its own and got after the quarterback despite giving up some big plays in the passing game. The big story, though, was injuries to key players on the Ravens, one of whom is now lost for the season.

Ravens Win, But Injuries Are the Story

J.K. Dobbins Out For The Season

It’s been a rough couple of years for J.K. Dobbins since his excellent rookie season, starting in the 2021 preseason when Dobbins suffered a torn ACL against Washington. He was hampered by knee injuries the following season, requiring surgery. Dobbins returned for the stretch run and played well as Baltimore made the playoffs. Dobbins held out financially this season as he is looking for a new contract. While he did score the Ravens’ first touchdown of the season in Baltimore’s win on Sunday, things worsened shortly after.

Dobbins suffered an injury after a tackle on a reception and limped off the field with a trainer. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Ravens feared he tore his Achilles. After the game, head coach John Harbaugh confirmed the severity of the injury. It’s a significant loss for a new-look Ravens offense and another blow to a player with a lot of talent. You feel for Dobbins, especially in this situation. With him being a free agent after the season, not only is a significant contract out of the picture, but his future with the Ravens is now a question mark.

Head Coach John Harbaugh announced that J.K. Dobbins has a torn Achilles and will miss the season.

Stanley, Williams, Lindenbaum Set For MRIs

Dobbins wasn’t the only injury concern for Baltimore. The Ravens saw losses on the offensive line and in a secondary that already needs Marlon Humphrey. Offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley suffered a knee injury. Safety Marcus Williams left the game with a chest injury. Center Tyler Linderbaum got rolled up on his knee. After the game, Harbaugh revealed the three are set for MRIs. Later on, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported that the fear is Williams tore his pectoral muscle.

What The Injuries Mean For the Ravens

Justice Hill scored two touchdowns after Dobbins went down. With Dobbins out for the season, Hill and Gus Edwards will be asked to step up again. Patrick Mekari and Sam Mustipher would take over for Stanley and Lindenbaum if they were to miss time. It’s another test for offensive coordinator Todd Monken and this new-look offense as they adjust to this new system. Geno Stone would take over for Williams. Baltimore travels to Cincinnati for Week 2 after the Bengals suffered a blowout loss to the Cleveland Browns.
