Lamar Jackson’s Contract Status Revealed After John Harbaugh Firing

January 17, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Baltimore Ravens effectively chose quarterback Lamar Jackson over former head coach John Harbaugh, and now the organization wants to re-work the contract of their two-time MVP. In a recent press conference, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said he wants to extend his star quarterback before free agency.

“The urgency of that matters to me because we’ve got free agents and I don’t want to go into free agency with that hanging over our head, Biscotti said. “It’s very hard for [Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta] to build a roster when that thing is not settled.”

BREAKING: Ravens Hoping To Give Lamar Jackson A New Contract Before Free Agency

It’s easy to see the Ravens want to extend Lamar Jackson, as his current $74.5 million cap hit is nothing short of ridiculous. Quarterback is the most important position in the game by a wide margin, so it’s physically impossible to overpay for an elite one like Jackson. However, you can’t build a great roster with one player accounting for that much money.

By extending his contract, the Ravens can spread Lamar Jackson’s cap hit over multiple seasons. Jackson currently carries that $74.5 million hit in 2026 and 2027, and he also has a $12.5 million cap hit in 2028 thanks to a void year.

Lamar Jackson spent the 2025 season battling injuries, but that shouldn’t prevent him from earning another record-setting contract. Starting and appearing in 13 games, the four-time Pro Bowler finished the season completing 63.6% of his passes for 2,549 yards, 21 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 74.0 PFF grade, the 20th-best mark in the league. He also added another 349 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Overall, the 2025 season was far from Jackson’s best. However, it’s safe to assume injuries prevented him from being at full strength for most of the year. Given a clean bill of health, he should return to being one of the league’s most unstoppable weapons in 2026.
