Washington County will receive more than $2.8 million in federal transportation funds for a new bus facility, Maryland’s two senators and congresswoman for the area announced Friday.
Sen. Angela Alsobrooks and Rep. April McClain Delaney said the money will go toward the design of a new “transit vehicle maintenance and storage facility” for Washington County Transit, according to a news release from Sen. Chris Van Holen. The lawmakers say the money will help the area expand services for a growing population — Washington County is expected to grow by 16% from 2020 to 2040.
“This funding will strengthen Washington County’s transit infrastructure to meet increasing demand, and offer residents a reliable and convenient way to get where they need to go,” Van Hollen said.
Alsobrooks and McClain Delaney released similar statements.
The three Democratic lawmakers lobbied Sean Duffy, the Trump administration’s transportation secretary, for funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s BUILD grant program back in February. For the 2025 fiscal year, this program funds $7.5 billion
Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the BUILD grant would “lay the foundation” for improved public transit in the western part of the state.
“This BUILD grant will advance Washington County’s new bus facility to final design, laying the foundation for the growth of the county’s transit system,” Wiedefeld said. “This will help to ensure residents have access to growing employment opportunities in logistics and warehousing, while also improving access to essential services like medical facilities – especially for older adults.”
Washington County also received transit funds through the Maryland Electric School Bus Grant Program, which provides $12 million in grants for electric buses and charging infrastructure across seven school districts statewide. Under this program, the Washington County Board of Education received a $100,000 grant, according to the Maryland Energy Administration.
