Here’s the roundup of state college lacrosse games between Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3.
Division I men
No. 5 Ohio State 14, No. 3 Maryland 10: Caleb Fyock made 19 saves and the top-seeded Buckeyes (14-2) beat the second-seeded Terps (11-3) to claim their first Big Ten championship in program history in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Saturday night. Ohio State set the tone early with a 5-0 run. Maryland’s first goal by Daniel Kelly (Calvert Hall) with 7:25 left in the first quarter had to be challenged by Maryland coach John Tilman before it counted. The Buckeyes never let the Terps get closer than three goals the rest of the way. Garrett Haas had a hat trick for Ohio State. Maryland got two goals each from Eric Spanos, Braden Erksa, Bryce Ford and Elijah Stobaugh. Maryland now must wait for Sunday night’s NCAA Tournament selection show to reveal the field of 18 teams.
Division III men
St. Mary’s 21, Penn College 8: The visiting Wildcats (14-5) took a 2-0 lead. The host Seahawks (9-7) answered with a 13-0 run and won the United East championship on Saturday. The fourth-consecutive league title victory secured an automatic bid in the NCAA Division III tournament. St. Mary’s was led Declan Horton (6 goals), Aiden Doyle (Broadneck, 5 goals, 2 assists) and Gavin McKay (3 goals, 1 assist). Alex Hammond made 10 saves for Penn College.
York (Pa.) 16, Stevenson 10: The host Spartans (16-3) took a 6-0 lead and beat the defending-champion Mustangs (14-5) in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth championship on Saturday. Tyler Merchant made 14 saves and Max Racich had four goals for Stevenson. Gavin Gismondi had five goals and three assists for York. The last time that the Spartans won the MAC Commonwealth championship was in 2023. York beat the Mustangs, 14-9.
Division I women
Bryant 12, UMBC 9: The Retrievers (11-5) got off to a fast start but fell behind against the host Bulldogs (11-6) in an America East Tournament semifinal on Friday. UMBC led 6-1 in the first quarter, but were outscored in each of the following three quarters. Bryant went on a 4-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull ahead. Gabriella Constant and Riley O’Mara each had two goals for Bryant during the run. UMBC was led by Katana Nelson with a hat trick, Grace Bruce (Century) with two goals and three assists and Isabella Fontana with 12 saves.
Division III women
Salisbury 13, Christopher Newport 9: The host Sea Gulls (14-4) got off to a slow start, but used a 7-0 run in the second half to pull ahead of the Captains (8-11) in Coast-to-Coast championship on Saturday. The victory secured the fifth consecutive league title (23rd overall) and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Regan McDonnell (Severna Park) and Julianna Ott (Glenelg) each had a hat trick for Salisbury. Maelyn Eversole had four goals and an assist for Christopher Newport.
St. Mary’s 24, Bryn Athyn 5: The Lions (8-5) took an early 1-0 lead. The host Seahawks (10-7) answered with a 16-0 run and claimed the United East championship on Saturday. The victory secures the fourth straight championship win and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament St. Mary’s was led by Sanne Elling (4 goals, 1 assist), Katelin Scala (Mount de Sales, 4 goals, 1 assist), Madison Lane (Mercy, 3 goals, 2 assists), Ella Baynes (Catholic, 3 goals, 1 assist) and Haley Betch (Severna Park, 3 goals, 1 assist).
York (Pa.) 17, Stevenson 11: The host and defending-champion Spartans (16-3) took a 7-0 lead and beat the Mustangs (12-7) in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth championship on Saturday. York was led by Zoe Kluegel with a game-high seven goals and Bella Garabo made 11 saves. Stevenson got a hat trick each from Erin Steinberg (Towson), Kara Yarusso and Olivia Galati.
