Michael Brockers explains why he wasn’t signed by the Ravens in 2020

Michael Brockers gives the short answer of how he didn’t end up a Raven in 2020.

Early in 2020, the Baltimore Ravens were revamping their defensive line. On March 15, 2020, they traded for Calais Campbell by sending a fifth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars. A day later, they’d reportedly agreed to a deal with defensive lineman Michael Brockers on a three-year, $30 million deal. Nine days after the initial agreement, the Ravens backed out of the agreement.

During Super Bowl Radio Row, Brockers joined the Ryan Ripken Show and was asked about what happened.

“It’s COVID. Right before that season ended I had like an injury. I had an ankle injury, and COVID happened,” Brockers said. “I had no real way to rehab. So, I did some X-rays at one of the hospitals that let me go in, did the scans, they sent them to Baltimore. They thought that I couldn’t play anymore. That’s kind of the short answer to that question.”

With Brockers’ deal with the Ravens rescinded due to the ankle injury, Brockers returned to the Los Angeles Rams on a three-year deal worth up to $31.5 million.

Brockers played three more seasons in the NFL, one with the Rams in 2020 before joining the Detroit Lions for the final two years of his career. In 2020, he finished with 51 tackles, 10 quarterback hits and five sacks. Those numbers would’ve been beneficial to the Ravens in that year, where he’d been second on the team in sacks (behind Matt Judon, 6.0) and been one tackle shy of tying Derek Wolfe for most tackles among defensive linemen.

Brockers lamented never wearing the purple and black, citing how he looked sharp in LSU’s purple and gold.

“I know I would have [looked good in purple and black] because I look good in purple and gold,” Brockers said.
