Just three days after the Ravens heartbreaking loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship, the Ravens will now be on the search to find their next defensive coordinator. Mike Macdonald who helped led the Ravens defense for the last two seasons will be on his way to Seattle to take over the Seahawks in hopes of returning that franchise back into perennial Super Bowl contenders.
With success comes opportunities like these especially for young coordinators. Macdonald in his two seasons as Ravens defensive coordinator, Macdonald transformed the defense from a middle of the pack, to becoming the leagues best defense. This past season Macdonald helped the Ravens become the first team in NFL history to lead the league in sacks (60), takeaways (31), and points allowed per game (16.5). MacDonald’s schemes and adjustments helped the likes of safety Geno Stone, linebacker Patrick Queen and defensive lineman Justin Madubuike have career years. As well as veterans Jadeveon Clowney and Kyle Van Noy both reach career highs in sacks.
The Ravens will now need to find their next defensive coordinator with several in house candidates that could be perfect fits. Assistant head coach and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver seems to be the most obvious choice to take over defensive play calling duties, but even Weaver has been asked for interviews form several teams including interviewing for the Washington Commanders open head coaching position. Defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson and inside linebackers coach Zach Orr have also been talked about as possible replacements.
