NFC Contender May Sign “Elite Footwork” Draft Prospect

April 23, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Cowboys may sign Guyton

NFC Contender Dallas Cowboys may sign “elite footwork” draft prospect and Oklahoma product offensive tackle Tyler Guyton in this year’s NFL Draft. The Cowboys have been quiet this offseason in terms of making moves to improve their roster so this means they could use the draft to pick up the slack. One thing they’re always wanting to improve is their offensive line position which has been dominant over the past decade. However, it’s one of the positions that has a glaring hole and the Cowboys may focus on the first round to select one.

The team has been consistent in selecting an offensive tackle to rebuild the line for their franchise quarterback in 2011. They did this when Tony Romo was still the franchiser by selecting Zack Martin and Travis Frederick, who later retired. The Cowboys are looking to do the same since losing All-Pro Tyron Smith to the Jets and Tyler Biadasz, who plans to line up against them twice a year. Jerry Jones could continue to fortify the line of scrimmage in this year’s draft, and the first guy may be Guyton.

According to ESPN’s latest Mock Draft, they are projecting that the Cowboys will select Oklahoma product with the No. 24 overall pick. There have been rumors that they may move Tyler Smith to the left tackle position but they may as well fill that hole in the first round this Thursday. It would be smart for Dallas to keep Smith at the guard position while Guyton can make a smooth transition to the left side. He’s a 6-foot-8 and 322-pound guy who has a lot of upside that can be the next Tyron Smith successor.

The inexperience is still visible though since he made the transition from defensive end to offensive tackle.

How He Fits with the Team

According to a scouting report, the Oklah0ma product is a plug-and-play starter that has a lot of athleticism and quick feet. This rarity could be crucial for the Cowboys offense who may be looking to use a lot of play-action plays under Dak Prescott. It could help contribute to the running back game, especially whoever they draft this year. There’s still plenty of work to do with his size and strengths as he develops but having someone with speed is something they need.

According to Pro Football Focus, he only allowed two sacks across 27 career collegiate games while going the entire 2023 season without surrendering a single sack and only nine quarterback hurries. These characteristics and attributes could intrigue the Cowboys to draft him as early as round one. His flexibility would make his transition smooth to become a long-term option on the left side. There are still other prospects out there that Dallas may select in the first round.

This year’s offensive lineman draft class is loaded with talent across the board. Guys like JC Latham, Troy Fautanu and Amarius Mims may be available at the No. 24 pick when the Cowboys make their selection. No matter what, the Cowboys are expected to keep stacking at the offensive lineman position beyond the first round.

Potential Team Fits for Guyton

Many sources believe that the Baltimore Ravens may add the versatile offensive tackle after trading Morgan Moses to the Jets earlier this offseason. He could slide to the left side if the team decides to move on from left tackle Ronnie Staley. However, it’s worth noting that the Ravens saw a lot of success from Orlando Brown Jr. who was selected in the 2018 Draft. This could be the same case for Baltimore if they bring in another Oklahoma product to fill their glaring hole.

Guyton fills the athletic build for the Kansas City Chiefs and they love getting offensive tackles that are still in development. The Chiefs have not yet re-signed their left tackle Donovan Smith so Guyton could be someone to fall at with the No. 32 pick to fill the need.
