NFL Insider Believes Former First Rounder May Request Trade – Ravens, Panthers Among Potential Fits?

December 18, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

garrett wilson request trade

One NFL Insider believes former first-rounder Garrett Wilson may request a trade after the 2024 season. According to Rich Cimini, many people in Wilson’s circle believe he could want out of the New York Jets after spending the first two seasons with them. Originally selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the uprising talent might want to take his skills elsewhere since frustrations have been growing each week he plays with the Jets. Since trading for Davante Adams in hopes to save the team’s chances for a postseason, the Jets don’t have an excellent supporting cast which wouldn’t be surprising if Wilson wants a trade.

Before Aaron Rodgers‘ arrival, Wilson was shaping himself to be a special playmaker in the league setting franchise records for receptions and receiving in a single-season. He finished his rookie season with 83 receptions for 1,103 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Rodgers and Adams won’t be the only ones who might be leaving New York but it would be a big blow to the entire organization if Wilson decides he wants out as well. However, the team has the leverage in this situation since Wilson is still on a rookie contract, they could franchise tag him after the 2025 season.

It’ll be interesting to see how this will play out. It shouldn’t be a shocker to many if sits out the entire season next year if he doesn’t get his way. Here are some potential fits for Wilson if he gets his true desire to head to another team.

Possible Next Teams

Baltimore Ravens

It’s fair to say the Diontae Johnson saga could be over in Baltimore before he ever got a legitimate chance to show his true shine. With Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman still the top two receivers for MVP Lamar Jackson, the Ravens were quiet this past offseason about adding another wideout since releasing Odell Beckham Jr. from his contract. Nelson Agholor is aging but the Ravens offense doesn’t have a long-term third man behind both Bateman and Flowers, Wilson could easily earn the starting role at the No. 2 spot. He might be worth the investment to provide some long-term stability in Jackson’s passing game.

Carolina Panthers

After back-to-back disastrous years in Carolina, the Panthers are going back to the drawing board again to invest in more offensive weapons for whichever signal-caller they’ll stick with. However, there’s no word on who will be the next quarterback despite Dave Canales benching Bryce Young earlier this season. Garrett Wilson might give this offense some relief in the passing game if Adam Thielen decides to leave which could complicate things for rookie Xavier Legette.

Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert is arguably still one of the best quarterbacks regardless of the inconsistent wide receiver he has. Jim Harbaugh has no plans to ever replace so the Chargers should start making some long-term investments and Garrett Wilson should be on their radar. Rookie Ladd McConkey is shaping himself to become a reliable ferocious slant receiver while he could be an excelling weapon alongside Wilson taking care of the deep threat.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have been getting lucky for the past several games with a weak offense that’s one injury away from crumbling despite trading for DeAndre Hopkins. Marquise Brown is returning in hopes to keep the Chiefs’ hopes alive in the postseason but as Hopkins and Brown will become free agents in 2025, there’s no guarantee of them returning to Kansas City. Wilson might be the better game-changer in this situation in playing alongside rookie Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice when he returns.

Miami Dolphins

If the rumors are true, the Miami Dolphins will likely have to find another wide receiver since Tyreek Hill is teasing he wants out of the team. The Dolphins signing a long-term receiver like Garrett Wilson could make sense to save Tua Tagovailoa’s career while helping Braxton Berrios recover back on the field. Jaylen Waddle continues to show why he’s the future so it makes sense for head coach Mike McDaniel to keep building upon that.
