One More Jets Veteran May Leave Team To Test Free Agency

Another Jets veteran cornerback DJ Reed may leave the team to test free agency in March. It’s hard to imagine that any talent wants to stay in New York with the rebuilding offseason they’re heading toward. According to a Bleacher Report, Reed says he’s willing to stay with the Jets but ready to see what’s next for him. The team came into this 2024 campaign with high expectations but with questions about the starting quarterback position, Aaron Rodgers didn’t put the Jets in the best position to win ballgames despite trading for Davante Adams as well to revitalize their season potentially.

These three veterans aren’t the only ones who are expecting to leave, star cornerback Sauce Gardner wants to leave as well. It’s a huge blow to the organization who were anticipating a nostalgia run from Rodgers, but Reed could easily revive his career with a new scenery. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Kansas State product began his career with the Seattle Seahawks before becoming a journeyman, signing with the San Francisco 49ers and later with the Jets a year after in 2022. He may not be an explosive signing but with 404 tackles total tackles, six interceptions and 50 pass deflections, it’s clear he has something to offer for a new roster.

Here are some possible next teams for Reed.

Possible Next Teams

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are in the driver’s seat for a three-peat Super Bowl win but the majority of the offense has been dependent on the defense stepping up. Patrick Mahomes hasn’t been the same despite the weapons the team brought in talent like DeAndre Hopkins and a returning Marquise Brown but the secondary has been explosive to give the offense several chances. However, cornerback Trent McDuffie is great and looks like the next L’Jarius Sneed but there’s nothing to back him up. If they can’t make a Sauce Gardner trade happen, they might have to settle for Reed who could give the secondary a long-term fix ahead of Steven Nelson and Jaylen Watson.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens have been looking like Sonic under the wing of quarterback Lamar Jackson and bulldozer Derrick Henry. However, the secondary has been non-existent despite the talent they were building around with huge anticipation. Rookie Nate Wiggins has been showing signs of life while Marlon Humphrey is still best in the game, it doesn’t make up for the rest of the team’s secondary where they’re lacking. The Ravens could get younger by signing Reed because guys like Brandon Stephens probably won’t be a long-term fix, especially with his inconsistencies.

Los Angeles Chargers

Head Coach Jim Harbaugh is heading to his first playoff game in years with a new squad under Justin Herbert thriving in the passing game. However, the Chargers might benefit from adding a new cornerback in replacement of Kristian Fulton. The team may have a deep group in the secondary but they have a lot of inexperienced athletes who need more playing time. Tarheeb Still is showing early signs of making a longevity impact but a healthier Reed might be the last piece to the pass defense to create the “No Fly Zone” era.
