After salvaging the secondary unit, the Carolina Panthers could target possible cut candidate Donovan Wilson this offseason. According to a report, one Panthers insider believes the team could target some cut candidates that may become available on the market, and one of them may include Wilson. It’s easy to see why the Panthers could try to sign the safety after spending two offseasons building an offense for quarterback Bryce Young. The team signed Trevon Moehrig at the start of free agency to improve the secondary department after having one of the worst campaigns last year. Nick Scott might not replicate the same success as Moehrig, so they could use someone like Wilson to give them relief.
As for the safety, he’s been in several reports that the Dallas Cowboys could release Wilson. While the Panthers did draft Lathan Ransom, Wilson could provide some temporary relief to give the pass secondary some firepower in the backend of the depth chart. Originally selected in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Texas A&M product signed a three-year deal in 2023, but since he’s entering the final year of his contract, they might have no other choice but to release him due to salary cap concerns. After recording 44 solo tackles, five pass deflections, 4.5 sacks and one interception, it might not be enough for the Cowboys to give him another deal that probably won’t fit in their budget.
If the Panthers don’t sign him and if Wilson becomes available, these other rosters could target him.

Possible Destinations
Baltimore Ravens
After losing Ar’Darius Washington, the Baltimore Ravens can’t ignore adding relief behind 2025 draft pick Malaki Starks. The Ravens always bode well when adding more explosiveness to their secondary, and trading for Tre’Davious White was a representation of that, even though he didn’t have the best season. It kept this secondary department afloat, which was something they would need for this upcoming season. Kyle Hamilton is great, but even the uprising stars need all the help they can get to avoid any burnout or stress.
Wilson isn’t the long-term fixture of this safety unit, but even with a possible trade, the Ravens could pull it off to add some depth in the department. He won’t start over Starks, but it buys him time to learn the playbook and get adjusted in the league.
New Orleans Saints
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints currently have one of the worst secondaries in the league. Kool-Aid McKinstry is the lone cornerback who has some upside, but Wilson is a safety. However, they could bolster one unit to make up for the cornerback position. The Saints have two lockdown safeties in Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid, but they could benefit from Wilson in the background to hold it down if they can’t find a cornerback in their budget.
General Manager Mickey Loomis always finds a way to make moves work, and after the Derek Carr retirement, they have a little bit of freedom to spend on Wilson.
Kansas City Chiefs
However, no one should count out the Chiefs adding another safety before the 2025 regular season. Jaden Hicks and Bryan Cook have huge shoes to fill following Justin Reid’s departure. They’re in a similar situation that Trent McDuffie was in, but the Chiefs’ defense always finds a way to make it work. Despite signing Mike Edwards, they could continue to salvage the unit by signing Wilson if he becomes available.
