Panthers, Ravens May Pursue Former First Rounder in Trade

The Carolina Panthers or Baltimore Ravens may pursue former first-rounder defensive end, Tyree Wilson in a trade before the regular season begins. According to a report, Bleacher Report says that the Raiders could put Wilson on the trade block since he’s been failing to meet expectations for the team to might even consider bringing him back. Wilson’s rookie season was a flop since he was dealing with injuries and had an inconsistent performance. The Raiders have been having issues for the past few years sustaining a winning culture so it might be right for him to move on to a championship team since Las Vegas doesn’t have the luxury to wait around.

Despite his struggles, any team that is looking for solid immediate depth could see Wilson as a raw and promising edge rusher. Trading him would probably allow the Raiders to get a worthy talent or additional draft capital, which could address the needs that the team could fill like the secondary or offensive line depth. The emergence of defensive end Malcolm Koonce will limit the number of snaps that Wilson gets but it could be too soon that the Raiders would be moving on. However, there should be a team out there that’s looking for his potential since he’s still on a rookie contract that would allow a team to get him for cheap.

The Panthers have been doing a lot of work for their offense but have added a few talents like Jadeveon Clowney. However, Derrick Brown is one of the most promising defensive pieces but a young Wilson will allow him to push further. Meanwhile, the Ravens have one of the youngest defensive lines this year with Travis Jones and Brent Urban. Someone like Wilson could build with them.

Other Potential Trade Fits

New Orleans Saints

Chase Young might have a decent chance to give the defense extra life but Wilson can give the Saints a long-term option. Wilson may not have been consistent but when he’s healthy, he could be a great viable option to help veterans like Cameron Jordan in the pass rush since he’s getting older. The Saints have one of the worst offenses and Derek Carr doesn’t look to be getting any better so they might as well improve their defense to give them a fighting chance to head to the postseason. The Saints don’t have a lot of offensive pieces so it might be better to establish a hard-hitting defense that can give the team a chance to win some ball games.

Tyrann Mathieu is good for pressure situations even though he is just a safety but a Wilson-type addition could give him freedom to explore the no-fly zone.

Los Angeles Chargers

Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack are coming back on new contracts which should give Jim Harbaugh every reason the defense will still be solid. However, the team should be able to consider adding a young defensive piece that can last longer. Eventually, Mack and Bosa are going to want bigger deals which would lead to one of them in a different uniform since the Chargers aren’t paying two athletes big contracts at the same time.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have surprisingly been able to restructure their defensive line after losing Dante Fowler Jr. and Dorance Armstrong. Eric Kendricks, Carl Lawson and Jordan Phillips are solid additions but they should go all-in to make a trade with the Raiders. Wilson had a rough rookie campaign but his size and what the Cowboys are looking for could give the defense a long-term upside.
