Panthers Second-Round Pick Named A Potential Cut Candidate

May 21, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Terrace Marshall Cut

The Carolina Panthers selected Terrace Marshall in the 2021 NFL Draft hoping that he could bring his LSU magic to the big stage, but it appears as though the team will cut him. The former second-round pick had a rookie season to forget, recording just 17 receptions for 138 yards. He followed that up with 28 receptions for 490 yards and a score in 2022, showing some signs of life and providing hope for the future.

However, despite a strong training camp, the wide receiver took another step back in 2023. Failing to emerge on one of the weakest depth charts in football, the LSU product finished the season with just 19 receptions for 139 yards and no touchdowns. Now, with a new head coach and general manager, Joe Person of The Athletic believes the Panthers could cut Terrace Marshall.

Report: Panthers Could Cut Terrace Marshall

This report isn’t too surprising, as a Terrace Marshall cut has been a long time coming. The second-round pick requested a trade midway through the 2023 season, and while nothing came of that, it’s clear to see that both team and player are ready to move on.

Last year, the Panthers had the worst group of wide receivers in the league, and Marshall still failed to make an impact. Over the past few months, Carolina acquired Diontae Johnson and first-round pick Xavier Legette, decreasing the likelihood that Terrace Marshall makes the cut.

Teams won’t go crazy over Terrace Marshall if and when the Panthers cut him, but some organization should give him a chance to prove himself. Even if it’s just a spot on the practice squad, don’t be surprised if Marshall ends up with one of these teams.

Possible Landing Spots

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers need all the help they can get at wide receiver. Ladd McConkey has some promise, but the rest of the depth chart leaves a lot to be desired. Quentin Johnston had a historically bad rookie year, and the rest of the receivers are either Day 3 rookies or journeymen. Terrace Marshall isn’t much better than any of those players, but the Chargers need to throw as many darts as they can and see what sticks.

Kansas City Chiefs

Rashee Rice will face a significant suspension for his offseason of crime, which means the Chiefs could use another wide receiver. Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown are a reliable duo, but the reigning Super Bowl champions could use some more depth. Terrace Marshall might not be a superstar, but he should be able to compete with Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore, and Justyn Ross if cut.

New England Patriots

Much like the Chargers, the New England Patriots are casting a wide net to find answers at the receiver position. Bill Belichick believed in taking low-risk fliers on talented prospects, and while he’s no longer with the team, his philosophy likely lives on in the current front office. Chances are, Terrace Marshall will be nothing more than a practice squad player, but it shouldn’t be too hard for the cut candidate to beat out guys like Tyquan Thornton.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens lost some talented players in free agency and didn’t have the resources to replace all of them. With Odell Beckham now in Miami, someone must emerge as the third option in this passing attack. Rashod Bateman showed some flashes and rookie Devontez Walker has decent downfield potential, but nobody on this team has the size and strength to cut it in contested situations like Terrace Marshall.

New Orleans Saints

The cash-strapped Saints could use another receiver but lack the resources to bring in a proven commodity. After watching Terrace Marshall multiple times over the past three years, perhaps Dennis Allen and company found something they like in the cut candidate.
