Ravens Cut Veteran Running Back Before Divisional Round Game

Melvin Gordon won’t represent the Baltimore Ravens during Saturday’s AFC Divisional Round showdown with the Houston Texans.

The Ravens waived the 30-year-old running back on Wednesday. Gus Edwards and Justice Hill are their two active running backs, but that could change later this week.

Baltmore added Gordon on a one-year deal during the summer. Following an early season-ending injury to J.K. Dobbins, Gordon turned 16 touches into 99 yards during Weeks 3 and 4.

The 30-year-old didn’t play again for nearly three months. After placing rookie Keaton Mitchell on the injured reserve with a knee injury, the Ravens signed Gordon back from the practice squad.

He scored his 70th career touchdown in a Week 17 blowout over the Miami Dolphins and ran for 18 yards with a lost fumble in the final game of the regular season.

Another former Pro Bowler could take his spot on the 53-man roster.

Baltimore signed Dalvin Cook to the practice squad after the New York Jets cut him. The 28-year-old may replace Gordon as the third-string back for the AFC North champion’s second-round matchup.

“I’m going to work my tail off,” Cook said last week. “I’m going to lay it on the line for these guys.”

The Ravens could also welcome back Mark Andrews, who missed the last six games with an ankle injury. Head coach John Harbaugh said the star tight end “took a big step” when returning to practice Tuesday as a limited participant. Andrews made more progress when practicing in full on Wednesday.

Saturday’s game between the Ravens and Texans starts at 4:30 p.m. ET on ABC and ESPN.
