Ravens HC John Harbaugh discusses role of DB Brandon Stephens

June 2, 2022 by Ravens Wire

The Baltimore Ravens have reshaped their secondary over the course of the 2022 offseason and now boast a deep group at both the cornerback and safety positions. They have a great combination of star power and depth, which should position them well to overcome any injuries that they suffer throughout the year.

One of the players who could see an increased role in 2022 is defensive back Brandon Stephens. Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh was asked about if the team is trying the second-year player all over the field, and he responded by talking about Stephens’ versatility and what he’d classify him as at this point.

“It’s almost like you’re saying. It’s almost like we’re not so much trying him all over; we’re kind of playing him all over, because he can. He’s very versatile. We’ve got a lot of safeties. We added another corner now, so there’s a lot of depth in there. But he can play outside; he looked good today, doing it. He can go inside in the slot; he’s done well with that. He can play safety. We haven’t played him as much at safety in these last two practices. But I would say he’s a corner/safety instead of a safety/corner at this point in time.”

Stephens started off his collegiate career as a running back at UCLA, but after two years transferred to SMU to play cornerback. He was selected in the third round of the 2021 draft by the Ravens and played at safety, but in 2022 his role could be that of a do-it-all defensive back, something that Stephens certainly has the skillset to do at a high level.
