Ravens Hire Jesse Minter as New Head Coach

January 23, 2026 by Maryland Sports Blog

The Baltimore Ravens have agreed to terms with former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter as the team’s new head coach.

Two weeks after firing long time head coach John Harbaugh, and after interviewing 16 different head coaching candidates, the Ravens will now have just their fourth head coach in team history.

Minter, who turns 43 in May, is no stranger to Baltimore as he served as defensive assistant and eventually was promoted to assistant defensive back coach, then defensive back coach from 2017-2020. Minter would leave the Ravens following the 2020 season to become the defensive coordinator a Vanderbilt, before leaving for the defensive coordinator position at the University of Michigan under Jim Harbaugh. In 2023, Minter helped the Michigan defense become the number one ranked defense in the country allowing just 10.4 points per game and allowing an average of just 247 yards per game on their way to winning a nation championship that season. Minter also served the Wolverines interim head coach for the first game of the 2023 season while then head coach Jim Harbaugh was serving a three-game suspension. Minter and Michigan would go on to defeat East Carolina by a final of 30-3.

Minter would follow Jim Harbaugh to the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024 to serve as the Chargers defensive coordinator. Minter helped a struggling Chargers defense taking them from the 28th ranked defense prior to his arrival to the 11th ranked defense in just his first year. In 2025 Minter did even better as the Charger ranked 5th in total defense allowing just 20 points per game, and 285.2 yards per game. The Chargers ranked tied for 7th in total team sacks with 47, compared to the Ravens who finished 2025 with 30 total team sacks tied with three other teams for 28th best.

Minter has a lot of expectations coming into his first season as the Ravens head coach as he now fills the shoes of the longest tenured Ravens head coach in team history in John Harbaugh. Minter will have one of the most talented rosters heading into 2026, and with two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson leading the charge it will be interesting to see the direction Minter takes this team. The Ravens undoubtably need to be better on the defensive side of the ball in 2026, and with Minter now here in Baltimore it seems likely that the Ravens defense will get back to form. The question still remains however as to who the Ravens next offensive coordinator will be. Many reports have linked former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury as the most likely candidate to join Minter’s staff.
