The Baltimore Ravens have had to rely on multiple players stepping up in the wake of injuries to key contributors. One of those players has been backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, who has played very well when called upon.
Huntley could be the signal caller behind center on Sunday in Week 16, as starting quarterback Lamar Jackson is still battling an ankle injury. When Baltimore offensive coordinator Greg Roman was asked about how much confidence he thinks Huntley has gained from the last two games, the coach talked about how well he’s learned from his mistakes and expressed how he’s prepared each and every week.
“Tyler [Huntley] has impressed upon me that he’s a guy – and this is critical to any player coming into the NFL, and you can identify it fairly quickly – when some people make the invariable mistake or don’t do something the right way, what do they do next time? Do they learn from that? He’s been a guy who, as he’s young and he’s learning through this experience, which is really the only way to learn, he’s the guy that puts those things behind him and moves on to the next inevitable moment for a young player. He’s done a great job from learning from a mistake, or a misread, or a ballhandling, or cadence or whatnot. It’s all part of the process of playing one of the biggest juggling acts of professional sports, which is playing quarterback in the NFL. Every week, he gets better and better. As he gains experience, I really feel like he’s going to continue to improve. As good as he played last week, I know in his mind, with the competitor that he is, he’s looking to play a little bit better all the time. I think he’s a realist when it comes to that, but also, his confidence is definitely growing. He’s a very diligent preparer. He prepares very diligently, and I think that’s one of his greatest assets.
For being thrust into such an important role, Huntley has responded in a big way. He’s shown that he has what it takes to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, and should continue to improve with time. While there’s not a spot for him as the No. 1 quarterback in Baltimore when Lamar Jackson is healthy, the Ravens organization must be very pleased that they have two quarterbacks who can step in and play at a high level.
