A curious signing for the Ravens
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Baltimore Ravens have signed rookie quarterback/wide receiver hybrid Malik Cunningham.
Cunningham, 25, went undrafted to the Patriots this year after a five-year career as a Louisville Cardinal. At Louisville, Cunningham totaled 9,664 passing yards on 62.6% completion, with 70 touchdowns to 29 interceptions. Like Lamar Jackson before him, he’s a dual-threat quarterback who slashed into defenses, totaling 3,182 yards and 50(!) rushing touchdowns on 5.1 yards per carry.
When the Patriots landed Cunningham, he was primarily used as a wide receiver throughout the Spring and Summer. After being cut by the Patriots during roster cutdowns, he was brought back to their practice squad in early September. Cunningham saw action in one game on the Patriots, playing six snaps; his only stat was taking a five-yard sack against the Las Vegas Raiders.
“I wanted to thank Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick for giving me opportunity to play with the Patriots,” Cunningham said in a statement. “I learned a lot from them. I want to be a coach one day, so I would take notes from coach Belichick because he’s one of the greatest of all time. I had great teammates in New England and built relationships that will last a lifetime. But I just feel like this is a good opportunity for me and I’m excited to be a Baltimore Raven.”
