REPORT: Eagles Decline Fifth-Year Option for Trade Candidate During NFL Draft

April 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

fifth year jahan dotson

The Philadelphia Eagles will decline the fifth-year option for trade candidate wide receiver Jahan Dotson ahead of the NFL Draft. According to a report, it looks like the team will not be keeping the wide receiver anytime soon, as Dotson became the subject of trade rumors after the 2024 campaign. The Eagles are still searching for their third man receiver to help DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown in the aerial attack. After not giving Dotson a new contract, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Eagles end up trading the wide receiver to a new roster this weekend.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Penn State product began his journey with the Washington Commanders, hoping to be a capable wideout for the team. Despite that, the Commanders were building a new regime under head coach Dan Quinn last year, so the team sent Dotson to the Eagles, where he won a Super Bowl in his first year with them. Even though he hasn’t made much of an impact, he had a few plays during the big game that may interest teams out there for his upside he may provide.

Dotson might of been on the wrong foot, but these five teams could ring up the Eagles’ phone and make an offer.

Next Possible Teams

Los Angeles Chargers

Last season, the Chargers got much farther even though they had one of the worst wide receiving units in the league. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey is still the only reliable set of hands this upcoming 2025 season, as veteran Mike Williams is past his prime. The Chargers must do something to help quarterback Justin Herbert thrive, throwing the football to dethrone other AFC teams. While Dotson isn’t the most elite, he could carve out a role to be a consistent ball catcher in the aerial attack.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens could use another wide receiver since veteran DeAndre Hopkins is signing a one-year deal. It seems like he’s in it for one season to win a potential ring and retire after, since he’s aging. This means wideouts like Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman will need a third, and someone like Dotson could fit the billing in the Ravens’ cap space as a reliable third man receiver.

New Orleans Saints

The bad news for the Saints is that they could lose Chris Olave if he decides to request a trade, even though they picked up his fifth-year option. After signing Brandin Cooks, no one should expect him to be as consistent since he isn’t in his prime anymore. If Mickey Loomis wants to see this team thrive to win ball games, they should trade for another pass catcher like Dotson to bolster this unit to help the next signal-caller of this franchise.

Dallas Cowboys

Even though the Eagles will never make a trade deal with the Cowboys, it’s not entirely impossible. The Cowboys are desperate to look for pass-catching talent to help CeeDee Lamb in the aerial attack. Meanwhile, the Eagles could be desperate as well since they need to improve their wide receiver department and find a capable replacement for Dotson.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are facing the continuing wide receiver dilemma again this 2025 season. Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice are talented, but they will only last as long as they stay out of trouble. Marquise Brown is returning to save this team, but just like Hopkins, only a short-term ring is what he’s looking for, not a long-term investment to stay with the roster.
