Report: Ravens sign RB Dalvin Cook to practice squad

The team is bringing an experienced veteran insurance policy as they gear up to make a deep playoff run.

Just a few hours after officially clearing waivers following his mutual parting of ways with the New York Jets on Tuesday, four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook has already found a new temporary home in Charm City. According to a report from Adam Schefter per the seventh-year veteran’s agency Loyalty Above All, he is expected to sign with the Baltimore Ravens on their practice squad.

Cook desired to play for a contender and is getting his wish in the biggest way possible by reportedly joining the top-seeded team in the AFC with the best record at 13-3 and arguably the most complete roster in the league. Unlike some veteran free-agent additions signed around this time of year, the 28-year-old is already in football shape and has relatively fresh legs after being sparsely used with the Jets.

In 15 games in New York including one start, he recorded 67 carries for 214 rushing yards and caught 15 of his 20 targets for 78 receiving yards in 15 games that included one start. The Jets season spiraled into despair and disarray following the season-ending torn Achilles suffered by four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers. Cook was originally brought in to form of a potent duo with second-year pro Breece Hall but took a backseat on the depth chart after the 2022 second-rounder became the team’s bell cow over the second half of the season.

2018: 70
2019: 75
2020: 70
2021: 66
2022: 81

The Ravens currently have all 16 of their practice squad spots filled after bringing back undrafted rookie cornerback Jeremy Lucien earlier this week so they’ll have to make a corresponding move to make the signing official. Cook is just a year removed from making four straight Pro Bowls from 2019-2022 with the Minnesota Vikings and is joining a crowded veteran backfield that already includes Gus Edwards, Justice Hill, and former two-time Pro Bowler Melvin Gordon on the active roster and undrafted rookie Owen Wright and third-year pro Jake Funk already on the practice squad.
