Report: Saints, 3 Others in on Davante Adams Trade – Chiefs, Ravens Out

October 10, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Davante Adams trade

Davante Adams is still a member of the Las Vegas Raiders, but it shouldn’t be long before a trade goes through. A second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Adams established himself as one of the game’s best receivers during his eight years with the Green Bay Packers and proved that his success wasn’t a byproduct of Aaron Rodgers over the last three years with the Raiders. Playing with Derek Carr in 2022, the wideout recorded 100 receptions for 1,516 yards and a league-best 14 touchdowns. Now 31 years old, Adams understandably wants to spend his final years playing for a contender and catching passes from better quarterbacks than Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell.

In a vacuum, every team in the league would love to have someone like Davante Adams on the roster, but not every team is in a position to make that trade. The Raiders reportedly want a second-round pick for the veteran’s services, and reports across the league indicate teams aren’t willing to meet that asking price. According to Tashan Reed of The Athletic, the Chiefs, Cowboys, Ravens, and Commanders are out on Adams, while the Jets, Saints, Steelers, and Bills are still in the bidding war.

Report: 4 Teams In Fighting Over Davante Adams In Trade Talks

The New York Jets remain the heavy favorites in the Davante Adams trade sweepstakes, and it’s easy to see why. Aaron Rodgers doesn’t look like his old self but, for better or worse, this team will live and die with him over the next year. While the quarterback claims he had nothing to do with the decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh, it’s suspicious that it happened after Rodgers talked with owner Woody Johnson. Pairing Adams with Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard would give Rodgers all the tools he needs to succeed. If he still can’t put up strong numbers with these three, it might be time to consider a new career.

The Saints are an interesting case, as Derek Carr will miss some time with injury. At 2-3, they can’t afford to go on a losing streak with fifth-round rookie Spencer Rattler, so they’ll probably wait to see what the South Carolina product can do before executing a Davante Adams trade. The Steelers need a wide receiver, as George Pickens is the only one with talent and the former second-round pick is charging towards Mike Tomlin’s doghouse. The Bills, meanwhile, will need to work some financial magic to fit Adams under the salary cap. Due to the financial limitations, an Amari Cooper trade might make more sense.

The Teams Out

The Chiefs need a wide receiver, but the Raiders won’t trade Davante Adams to their division rival unless they dramatically overpay. It makes more sense for them to go after someone like the Panthers Diontae Johnson. The Cowboys, meanwhile, refuse to get help for their high-priced superstars. Jerry Jones clearly doesn’t believe he can afford Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, and another star, so it’s no surprise they’re not involved in the bidding war.

The Baltimore Ravens could use another wide receiver, but they don’t need one. Lamar Jackson is playing like the two-time MVP he is, and his mobility combined with Derrick Henry’s hard-nosed style of play gives Baltimore a near-unstoppable rushing attack. They could use another set of hands in the passing game, but they might be better off with a complementary player like Zay Jones. The Washington Commanders already have the best offense in football, so while a Davante Adams trade would help, they don’t have much to improve on. If they want to go on a deep playoff run, they’ll add players to their defense during the trade deadline.
