Report: Two NFL Contenders Expected To Have Interest In Dalvin Cook

January 4, 2024 by The Spun

The New York Jets officially released Dalvin Cook on Wednesday. He’ll go through waivers before the final week of the regular season.

Cook could draw some interest from playoff teams eyeing backfield depth. Following the four-time Pro Bowler’s release, CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson reported that the Baltimore Ravens may target Cook for their practice squad.

The Dallas Cowboys may also consider signing the 28-year-old back.

Fast Update: My understanding is that the Dallas #Cowboys will also consider potentially adding Dalvin Cook. Still evaluating.

We’ll see where other interest could also develop… https://t.co/0VQ0iFPs83

Following four straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Cook was largely a non-factor in New York. He turned 67 carries into 214 yards — with no run going 15 or more yards — and zero touchdowns.

Cook had just 89 yards after initial contact and six broken tackles.

But if he clears waivers, a team isn’t risking anything by adding Cook to the practice squad and hoping a change of scenery sparks a reset.

The Ravens have compiled an NFL-high 159.7 rushing yards per game this season despite losing J.K. Dobbins to a torn Achilles in Week 1. They’re also now without Keaton Mitchell, who looked like a potential breakout candidate when averaging 8.4 yards per carry in limited reps.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson is Baltimore’s leading rusher ahead of Gus Edwards. Justice Hill could receive a bigger role during the playoffs, and Melvin Gordon played his first game in 12 weeks last Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys rank 14th rushing without Ezekiel Elliott. Tony Pollard has only 204 yards on 75 carries in the last five games, and Dallas placed rookie Deuce Vaughn on the injured reserve Wednesday.

Teams will have until 4 p.m. ET on Thursday to claim Cook off waivers. He’ll be free to sign anywhere after if he clears.
