An inmate at a jail in Allegany County was found dead in his cell, the jail’s second reported death of the year, according to Maryland State Police
On Sept. 6 at 6 p.m., Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted about an inmate death at North Branch Correctional Institution. The inmate, 38-year-old Patrick Candeloro, was found unresponsive on the floor of his cell by officers.
Candeloro was declared dead on the scene by emergency medical services. Maryland State Police and the forensic sciences division are investigating the death.
Another inmate, 30-year-old Elias Alvarado, died in North Branch Correctional Institution on July 18, the first death in the facility this year. According to officers, Alvarado was seen on camera standing in a hallway before he was found unresponsive on the ground. Alvarado’s death is still being investigated, but another inmate has been identified as a suspect, authorities said.
In 2024, North Branch Correctional Institution had six inmates die.
Last week a Maryland inmate, Tyjuan Chapple, was charged for first-degree murder for the death of another inmate, Shan Lanham, at Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County. Lanham was also found unresponsive on the floor of his cell.
